Neil Diamond Headed For The Future Review - An Album of Compromise

Neil Diamond Headed For The Future Review - An Album of Compromise

Featuring 'The Story of My Life', a record was planned to be released under this name until Neil's record label rejected it. This was an album inspired by the sad passing of Neil's father in 1985, with the songs very personal and dark. This album features several contemporary songwriters to enhance its commercial appeal.

In this video, I'll be discussing how effective this approach is to my listening ears.

Every Good Boy Deserves Favour: The Moody Blues Album That Gives Me Goosebumps

Every Good Boy Deserves Favour was one of the earliest Moody Blues records that I listened to, and I still thoroughly enjoy it to this day. Although I don't rank it as my favourite Moodies effort, one of its songs gives me goosebumps every time I hear it...

A Story of Two Neil Diamond ‘60s Bang Records Rarities - Crooked Street & Shot Down

Crooked Street and Shot Down, two Neil Diamond recordings from his time with Bang Records in the 1960s, never found their way onto a retrospective CD compilation ‘The Bang Years 1966-1968’, but do feature on contemporary Bang Records vinyl compilations. In this video, I tell my story of these two ‘60s Neil Diamond Bang Records rarities.

The Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn: An Album That Projects Calm

The last of a classic 7-album run, Seventh Sojourn sees a band at the end of their tether - but instead of arguments and bickering, this album rather projects the opposite - a feeling of calm. In this video, I revisit one of my favourite Moody Blues albums, featuring great songs such as 'New Horizons', 'The Land Of Make Believe' and 'When You're A Free Man'.

Neil Diamond - Heartlight: Album Review

After listening to Neil Diamond's first studio album of the 1980s, 'On The Way To The Sky', some time ago, I felt somewhat flat about this period of Neil's career. Fortunately, upon revisiting his next effort, 'Heartlight', I had a better time with the record. In this video, I detail my journey with the record and how it fits within Neil's catalogue.

The Joy of Bruce Springsteen's Second Album: 'The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle'

While 'The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle' doesn't rank amongst my favourite Bruce Springsteen albums, I find myself revisiting it just as much as my favourites, 'Tunnel of Love', 'Nebraska' and 'The River'.

In this video, I explore why this might be.

Dressed To Kill Is Better Than I Remembered

Dressed To Kill follows two great KISS albums, the self-titled debut and Hotter Than Hell. I don't revisit this album all that much and had a pre-conception that this album was weak. I'm glad to say that I was wrong. With great deep cuts 'Getaway', 'Love Her All I Can' and 'Room Service' along with well-known songs 'C'Mon And Love Me' and 'Rock And Roll All Nite', barring a few blips, this is still a great listen. A rock and roll party!

18 Tracks

After getting the ‘Dancing In The Dark’ single last week and seeing ‘Pink Cadillac’, a non album track on the B-side, it revitalised my interest in non-album tracks, particularly from Bruce. I listened to Bruce’s catalogue through the second half of last year and have found myself wanting more this year, generally live recordings and the likes of Electric Nebraska.

I remembered that I had this 18 Tracks compilation and was aware particularly that ‘The Promise’, the final track on this was highly rated.

However on first listen this afternoon I was quite shocked at just how solid the quality is in this collection. I’m often not too bothered about bonus tracks and non-album tracks, after all if they weren’t good enough for the album… why are they worth my time? But for Bruce, an artist who clearly cares about his craft; he talks in the liner notes that some of these tracks simply didn’t fit the albums he was recording (i.e Nebraska, Tom Joad) but most of these tracks are great efforts.

‘Seaside Bar Song’ takes me right back to The E Street Shuffle album, other songs have clear synergy with Darkness / The River. Some of the later tracks aren’t of such good quality - however I’ve only listened for the first time so I need more time with these recordings.

If you’re like me and haven’t played this before or haven’t got it out for a long time, give it a listen. I doubt I’ll go into the longer ‘Tracks’ set just at the moment, this is enough intrigue and material to sit with for now.

Mckenna Grace’s Bittersweet 16 embraces a pop-punk direction, setting it apart from the more introspective tone of her fantastic Autumn Leaves EP. It blends commercial pop with punk and rock influences, but does retain that emotional core, albeit with slightly less impact than Autumn Leaves.

On The Threshold Of A Dream, the third in a run of seven classic Moody Blues albums, was my introduction to the band and provided the gateway to many more albums in their catalogue. In this video, I share the story of how I discovered it.
