Are there any books that go into any kind of depth where Spartans and regular soldiers interact beyond the scope of a mission? Just casual banter, talking about Spartans, military life, whatever.

The style of writing change-up is kind of jarring. Going from Greg Bear and his detailed high sci-fi world to whatever is happening with Karen Traviss' writing is really throwing me off. Does the Kilo 5 Trilogy get better? Im about a third of the way through Glasslands and its just not really grabbing me.
