My father's choice for 4th of July (VA, USA)
The Guilford Courthouse flag. Of dubious provenance, claimed to have been flown at the battle of the same name near Greensboro, North Carolina. Though considered an American defeat, the high number of casualties inflicted on the attacking British force ultimately caused them to abandon their ambitions for control there. The subsequent months would steer General Cornwallis northward to Yorktown, Virginia, where a combined Franco-American force would force a surrender in Oct 1781, effectively ending major land engagements of the American Revolutionary War in the young United States. It would be another two years until the Treaty of Paris would conclude hostilities with France and Spain, formally ending the war and marking the close of the First British Empire.
