How big is Sabah’s IT community? Anyone interested in IT classes or workshops?

Hi everyone! How active is the IT community in Sabah, or Borneo in general?

I’m thinking of organising paid, in-person IT classes or workshops in Sabah, and I’d like to get a feel for what people here are interested in before planning anything.

What would you be keen to learn?

  • Homelab stuff — setting up your own servers, virtualisation, home networking, self-hosting, etc.
  • PC building — choosing parts, assembling a PC, troubleshooting, and upgrading.
  • IT certification prep — CompTIA Network+, Security+, CCNA, or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH).
  • Or something else entirely? Beginners are welcome to share what they’d like to get into too.

A bit about me: I’m from Selangor and currently living here because my wife works as a doctor at one of the hospitals. I work from home and have some time to explore this project.

Part of my motivation is to get more practice teaching, speaking in front of people, and putting together useful lessons as I prepare to pursue a PhD. I’d love to see whether there’s enough interest to make this happen here.

Why paid instead of free? Fair question. There would be costs like renting a coworking or training space, arranging lunch, and possibly bringing in an instructor from Semenanjung if a particular topic needs one. I’d like to work with Sabahan instructors and local resources as much as possible, though.

I’m not looking to make a huge profit, since I’d benefit from the teaching experience too. But I do hope there’s enough left over for a Starbucks and fish and chips for lunch 😂

Nothing is fixed yet; this is just an interest check. What topics would you actually attend, which part of Sabah are you in, and what price would feel reasonable for a half-day or full-day workshop? Also, are there any local IT groups or meetups I should connect with?

Thanks, everyone!

where do you guys service your car

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m from Selangor and recently moved to Sabah for work. I’ll be based here for around the next 5 years, so I’m still getting familiar with the area. 😄

I drive a Perodua Bezza and wanted to ask for some recommendations . where’s a good and trustworthy place to service and maintain a Perodua around Kota Kinabalu?

Preferably somewhere around Likas or nearby KK. I’m okay with either an authorised Perodua service centre but prefer a reliable independent workshop.

Would really appreciate recommendations from locals, especially places you’ve personally had a good experience with.

Thanks in advance! 🙏
