Mischief or Criminal Offence?
APPEAL FOR INFORMATION WE’RE NOT LOOKING FOR TROUBLE. WE’RE LOOKING FOR A FAIR ANSWER. As a small business in Singapore, every sale matters. Our Press On Me vending machine at Downtown East – E! Hub is normally replenished every 10–14 days. But recently, something didn’t feel right. During the weekend and holiday period, we noticed that the machine had almost no sales at all. 😳
We came down a few days later to check what was happening — and then we discovered a paper stuck on our vending machine saying: “OUT OF ORDER.” But here’s the shocking part… 👉 The machine was NOT out of order. 👉 It was working perfectly fine. 👉 Customers could still make purchases. We checked the CCTV and saw a young teenager placing the paper on the machine. Because of that one piece of paper, we lost few days of sales. And honestly, we were lucky we discovered it early.
If we had continued with our normal 10–14 day replenishment cycle without checking, the loss could have been much bigger. We are a small business. Singapore is already a challenging place for small businesses to survive, and every day we work hard to keep things going. So we’re not here to publicly attack this young person. We just want to ask a simple question: WHY DID HE DO IT? Was it just a prank? Was it mischief? Did someone ask him to do it?
Did he understand that this could affect someone’s livelihood? And more importantly… What is the right thing for a young person to learn from something like this? A Police Report has been made. If this young person is identified, we sincerely hope the relevant adults and school can help him understand why this action was wrong and what he should do differently in future. We are asking the public for a fair discussion, not a witch hunt. Maybe someone knows the full story that we don’t.
Small businesses can survive a lot — but sometimes, one small action can create a very big impact. If you know what happened at Downtown East / E! Hub, please reach out to Press On Me directly.
