Who is this lil’ guy? [Denmark]

This is a few years old by now - I found him crawling around in the grass yappin’ his lil’ heart out. I assumed he was likely dehydrated or sick, so I picked him up (NOT WITH MY HANDS) and placed him in a safer spot.

They live inside our roof, but they are usually pretty good at not getting in trouble. This is the only guy I’ve seen out of place in ~10 years, the other one decided to sleep in our fireplace (which was thankfully off because it was summer)

We’ve got 17 species in Denmark, but I can’t for the life of me ID him with certainty 😅

His face (as you can see) is sort of dog-like? I didn’t get a picture of it, because I didn’t want to stress the poor guy out.

Funniest “diagnosis”/treatment?

Hi! I know a lot of questions here are more owners asking advice, so I hope this is okay. I, like many kids, wanted to be a vet - But after watching Bondi Vet I decided that I would not be able to do it (so everyone working at a vet clinic is a hero to me haha)

I thought I would ask if any of you guys have ever had to give a silly/lighthearted diagnosis? I mean, I’m sure we’ve all seen owners freak out over discovering that their animal has a nipple 😅 It was one of my favourite parts of Bondi Vet, along with the silly solutions like the chicken bra!

So anyway! Tell me about any and all silly/unusual diagnoses/treatments where everything turned out fine, even if the owner had a bit of a heart attack coming in.

- Bank

- Forsikring(er)

- Egen læge (ift. at have nok medicin mens ændringen bliver foretaget)

- Udlejer

England bans ‘musclebreed’ — Denmark should follow suit, says dog trainer

For context: This article is old, but I thought it was interesting enough to translate and share here. There’s a lot to be said about the XL bully ban, and how it was implemented, and hopefully this article can make sense of things a bit.

‘Musclebreed’/‘muscledog’, is a term used in Scandinavia for breeds such as APBT, Amstaff, but also dogs like Tosa’s, Fila Brasileiro, and Boerboels. It is usually used for breeds that are seen as posing a threat to humans and/or pets.

The article in question is from 16th of September 2023 by journalist Oliver Fruergaard for Danish newspaper B.T.

Onto the actual article…

England Bans ‘musclebreed’ — Denmark should follow suit, says dog trainer

The debate has been raging in England, after multiple brutal attacks from the breed American Bully XL has lead to a country-wide ban.

A dog trainer from Copenhagen is now chiming in, and declaring, that Denmark should follow suit, and ban the breed that is currently available for purchase on Den Blå Avis [Essentially Danish craigslist/fb marketplace].

She however, does not share the idea that the breed itself is dangerous.

“I don’t think it is more aggressive, I think it’s about the owner.” Says Barbora Sdocova, who runs We Love Training in Copenhagen, and has worked in the field for ten years.

More mauled to death

The decision to ban the American Bully XL in England came Friday, after a 52 year old man Thursday was killed by dogs presumably of the exact breed.

The case is not alone - on the contrary statistics paint a picture of tendency in England:

11 people have been killed by American Bully XL dogs since 2021, shows an investigation by the Bully Watch organisation. There are 351 documented attacks from large American Bully’s in 2023 alone. The same breed is responsible for 43% of all dog attacks in 2023.

A recent admission from Rigspolitiet [The Danish police force] from April 2023, that B.T. has access to, shows that Danish Police has had to EB American Bully dogs multiple times since 2013. Albeit “just” twice due to skambid [essentially maulings, however they have a legal definition. Dogs who perform skambid are EB’d per law]. Skambid means [severe] bites of other dogs.

“It’s people who want a large and scary dog”

England’s prime minister sees the attacks as “a pattern of bad behaviour” and “not a handful of badly trained dogs” writes the BBC.

The latter - that it is the owner’s fault - has been an otherwise wellknown argument in the debate, one the experts agree with.

“All dogs can be dangerous, if humans do not train them properly, but I don’t think , that they are generally dangerous. They are of course stronger than chihuahuas, for example. That much is obvious. But if you know how to care for them, no dog is dangerous.” Says dog trainer Barbora Sdocova to B.T.

American Bully is a new breed and a very muscular one at that. B.T. Has previously been in compact with the Department of Domesticated Animal Genetics and Breeding, where they have found genes from either APBT or Amstaff in every all American Bully dogs, that have been tested.

Sdocova thinks, that specifically American Bully is overrepresented in some statistics, because the dog attracts a certain type of owner.

“It’s people who want a large and scary dog. That’s why they buy it. Then they’re rough with it and act aggressive.”

In that sense, the dog learns its behaviour says Barbora Sdocova, “like children.”

She thinks, that a ban would make it easier to avoid problems with American Bullies.

“I would regulate them. I’d make it illegal to have them, because then it is easier to control the owners.”

At the same time she points out, that partially because of illegal breeders, there can be problems with the dogs health.

Expert and Dyrenes Beskyttelse [Danish version of ASPCA] against ban

Professor at Copenhagen University and leader of Centre for Research of Family Pets Happiness, Peter Sandøe, underlines, that he doesn’t know anything about the American Bully XL breed, but that he knows about the amstaff, that is also illegal in Denmark.

He points to the fact, that owners could be the problem.

“There is status in such dogs. The owners might also walk them unleashed, something that is illegal, when you cannot control your dog.”

He does not support a ban furthermore, thinks that the Dog Law, that made several dog breeds illegal in Denmark, are “entirely problematic.”

“There is not enough proof that, any breeds on the list is especially dangerous towards people. Amstaff in Denmark is an illegal breed, while in Sweden they are beloved family pets.”

Whether it’s the dogs or owners fault - can’t a ban be an easy solution to avoid attacks?

“Yes, but if there’s not a significant problem in Denmark with American Bullies in Denmark, one might want to pause.”

Among Dyrenes Beskyttelse [Danish ASPCA] their stance is also, the owners are the problem.

“We are against Hundeloven [The law that bans several breeds], and we do not believe that, we should criminalise owning an American Bully. It is the owners, not the dogs, that are the problem.” Says leader of family pets Jens Jokumsen.

B.T. Has on prior occasion asked Rigspolitiet [Danish police force], how many times Danish police has had cases, wherein an American Bully was involved. But the Police Force is not in possession of these numbers, and refers instead to local departments.

It has not been possible to receive statistics from local departments prior the publication of the article.
