Witold Pilecki was a Polish intelligence agent who was a key member of the Polish Resistance during WW2. He allowed himself to be captured by the Nazis so he could be taken to Auschwitz and infiltrate the camp from the inside, developing an entire network within the camp. Despite managing to get information out of the camp to the allies, his reports weren't believed, until he finally managed to escape himself and provided some of the earliest extensive documentation to the allies regarding the concentration camps. He then continued fighting in the Polish resistance, until he was captured and spent the rest of the war in a POW camp. After the war, despite his extensive personal sacrifices to defeat the Nazis, he was arrested and eventually executed for his opposition to the Polish Communist regime.
