You ever feel like communism ruined the left?

Personally I don’t consider myself a leftist or a right winger. I know I’m sounding like an enlightened centrist but most of my views would place me on the left. But a lot of the things leftists believe nowadays is just downright horrific and things that were tried in communist countries and led to famine and oppression.

I support things like universal healthcare, relaxed immigration laws, basic equal rights for all people, LGBT rights, environmental protections, opposing racism etc….

But they lose me with this obsession with making everyone pay ridiculously high taxes, centralizing the market, attacking religion (I’m orthodox Christian), defending Islamic extremism, getting rid of the 1st Amendment and idolizing genocidal racist dictators like Stalin, Mao, Castro, Kim Jung Il, Ho Chi Min, Pol Pot or some other leftist dictator who constantly murdered and persecuted minorities, religious groups, successful people and LGBT people. Then they talk about opposing fascism while supporting a police state that controls everything.

Anarchism (or more specifically anarcho communism)

Can anyone explain the appeal? I have seen it all throughout the queer subreddits (and other places such as r/CrossStitch) and I did not manage to understand how it can work if labor isn't mandatory. I know why Stalinism sucks but I need to have good counter arguments against anarchism and anarcho communism specifically.
