In support of Bindweed

I honestly like bindweed.

  1. It's easy to identify and easy to hand pull even in dry soil.

  2. It creates a lot of lightweight biomass you can put back right where you just pulled it.

  3. Shades roots well.

  4. One of the first spring growth getting a fast groundcover.

  5. It let's lazy gardeners know its time to weed with pretty flowers.

  6. It surprising doesn't smother cultivars when overgrown.

  7. Its better than thistle, mallow, or whatever nastier weed might grow there instead.

To buy starts/plants or wait?

My hot feet loving plants still haven't sprouted. Will this week finally get them going? Is it too late for veggies and I should buy gallons to get a jumpstart due to time until frost? The melons do have plastic cover.

MIA: Corn, honeydew, canteloupe, watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber. Also Agastache, Crocosmia.

Palouse looks amazing today. Go for a drive!

Its hard to capture in a photo but the wheat (and some grass) is at just the right stage of contrasting color to capture the wind. Its amazing to watch the gusts rippling along the fields. Best views for me were 195 from Colfax heading N to Rosalia and the windy/hilly farm back roads. Pictured is Prairie View Road near Waverly.

Eggplant-less Caponeta

Did I just get a bad tray, or was last week' s Eggplant Caponeta missing detectable eggplant? I'm a fan of eggplant and so far its 0 for 2 with Tovala. I guess I'll stick with Michael Angelo's frozen eggplant parm.

Poppies

They are spectacular for about a week. I moved in October so had a fantastic surprise. Used to be intermixed with (supposedly invasive) Dame's Rocket. I've been scattering seeds with the iris and they make a great pair. 5-star, highly recommend if you have the space. Honeybees agree, although the swallowtail photo bombed and flew off.

Edit: They get 0 care other than cutting down in the fall.

Gravel parking pad xeriscape is in!

Now to wait 10 years for it to grow. Foundation is Native Intermountain West Songbird Pre-Planned Garden combined with their cold hardy saliva collection. Then the SCCD tree sale. Groundcovers from Tall Grass (waggon wheel penst), Fred Meyer (sedum poppers), NWSP (pineleaf penstemon), and Vickie's (the dark sedum whose name eludes me atm.) Also Firecracker penstemon inspired by the landscape design posting (from Floralia?)

The process was ordering the collection back in Jan. Invested in a $100 electric rototiller that did an amazing job churning the gravel, sand, woodchips and occasional rock. Designed with Garden Planner (was $10 from Amazon but no longer available.)

Monday meadow walk

Name that native! Tree tax at the end. All within about an half an acre. Contest winner can collect seeds? What is a good prize? I also have no idea how to ID grasses and would love a good book/site.

My first spring swallowtail. These are why I keep my invasive Dame's Rocket -- they love to dance around it. What is visiting your garden?
