Looking for an EV under $50k that isn’t a rolling appliance (and no Teslas 💀)

I’m looking to buy an EV and need some real opinions. My budget is 50k....definitely open to used since the market is flooded right now

Actual reliability & decent build quality (I like it when car panels actually line up).

Solid DC fast charging for the occasional road trip.

Physical buttons. I want a car, not an iPad holding my windshield wipers hostage.

Do NOT suggest a Tesla.

THE STARTER PACK FOR AN EV TRIP

Opening 4 different charging apps to verify if one single plug actually exists.

Zooming in on Google Maps satellite view to see if the charger is hidden behind a sketchy dumpster.

Saying "We'll just stretch our legs for 20 minutes" when it’s actually going to take an hour.

Checking the weather forecast solely to calculate wind resistance and battery degradation.

The utter betrayal of a public charger that says available but is actually dead in a ditch.

Is there a worse feeling than pulling up to a fast charger that your app swore was open, only to find it completely dark, taped off, or worse... a broken screen glowing with some cryptic error code from 2024?

Like I literally timed my entire route around this one stop. I sat in traffic, skipped a bathroom break, and rolled up with 11% battery just to be catfished by an inanimate object.

Now I’m sitting here figuring out if I can crawl 3 miles to a slow Level 2 charger at a random dealership without dying on the side of the road.

Why is it 2026 and public infrastructure still feels like a massive gamble? What's the worst lie a charging app has ever told you?

Hit the 10,000 km milestone today

Just watched my odometer roll over today and realized I’ve officially spent months completely plugged into the EV lifestyle. Looking back, the transition was so much smoother than I expected, and going back to a gas car feels like ancient history now.

Unpopular opinion: If you don't have home charging, you shouldn't own an EV. You're just clogging up public infrastructure.

I know people are going to get mad at this, but someone has to say it. The entire point of owning an electric vehicle is the convenience of plugging it in at night and waking up with a full battery.

Lately, every time I go on a road trip, fast chargers are completely packed with people who live in apartments or rentals doing their weekly top-up. You are literally turning the EV experience into the worst version of gas station lines. If your living situation doesn't support a dedicated charger, you should have bought a hybrid. You are single-handedly ruining the public charging infrastructure for people who actually need it to travel long distances.

Am I crazy here, or is everyone else just ignoring this?

The EV elephant in the room: We need to talk about 3-year resale value.

Everyone brags about saving money on fuel. Nobody talks about what happens when you try to sell your EV in 3 years.

Battery degradation fears, outdated software, newer models dropping constantly.

Is the resale market actually killing the real cost savings of owning an EV?

Anyone else obsessed with checking public chargers you don't even need?

Ever since I got my EV, I literally cannot walk past a public charger without slowing down to see if it’s working and check the speeds.

My battery will be at 85% and I'm still inspecting the plug like it's my job. Tell me I’m not the only one who has developed this exact brand of brain rot.

What’s the most irrational range anxiety habit you still can't shake off?

How many of you still turn off the AC or drive 55 mph in the right lane the second your battery drops below 30%, even though you know there’s a fast charger 5 miles away? What’s your ultimate habit that makes your friends think you're crazy?

I literally refuse to use the heater in the winter and just sit there shivering in three layers of clothes, all to save a hypothetical 4% of battery. My friends think I've entirely lost it.
