is dating young really a waste of time?

Hey everyone, this might sound like a dumb question but I haven't found a solid answer for it.

Why do people always say that dating at a young age is a waste of time and ruins your future/career? everyone claims you can't lock in if you're in a relationship at a young age.

but for me having a partner actually motivates me to try harder and get better, Why does my brain work like this when most advice says the opposite? or does it just depend on the person?

Another question: are longdistance relationships (LDRs) worth it?
