Pentair Plus30 SWGs are all DEFECTIVE!

I installed a 10k gal, plaster, salt water pool last summer using all top-of-the-line Pentair equipment: Intellichlor Plus30 SWG, two Intelliflow VSPs (one for pool, one for water features), and a cartridge filter. I have a pool guy, but notice the chemicals are never right when I occasionally test with near-zero chlorine and skyhigh pH (due to new plaster, of course). I then take the plunge and join the Trouble Free Pool cult (praise be to Taylor Test Kit) to find out what's really going on. After countless hours, I confidently determine the Plus30 SWG isn't generating any chlorine via overnight chlorine lost tests followed by overnight chlorine gain tests. I'm running that thing at 75% for 21 hours a day and should be generating over 10ppm daily. Instead, it generates NOTHING.

I have now had THREE Plus30 SWGs installed by Pentair. Not a single one has ever generated a single ppm of chlorine. I'm so frustrated with Pentair. It's clear they've had a bad batch of Plus30's but instead of throwing them out, they're installing and hoping pool owners are too stupid to notice. I want to shove my foot up the a** of their dipsh*t CEO.

Has anyone else had issues with their Plus30/40/50/60 SWGs?

Hi everyone,

My pool is about six months old. The pool guy comes weekly, then the chemistry is always out of whack two days later. FC would always be super low (or zero!), pH through the roof. He'd shock it every 2-3 weeks. I realized something must be wrong, and no one cares about your pool more than you - so I'm taking the plunge with TFP and figuring it out myself. Here's an overview of the pool:

  • 7,700 gallon pool, 1/4 is a tanning ledge
  • Plaster
  • Pentair IntelliChlor Plus30 SWG set to 75% (recommended setting, according to pool guy)
  • Pentair Intelliflow3 VSF at 2550 RPM (59GPM) running from 9-5 (8 hours total) for pool circulation
  • Pentair Intelliflow3 VSF at 3150 RPM (67GPM) running from 9-8 (11 hours total) for three scuppers and three bubblers
  • Live in Houston, TX with no shade over the pool - it gets a lot of sun!

First Taylor K-2006 SALT test results below (hallelujah no more Leslie's trips!). I shocked the pool five days ago, with three days of overcast and a lot of rain. The FC has been slowly dropping and I bet it would be near zero if I do nothing in another two days. Salt is high because the stupid Leslie's test last week said it was low and suggested I add a bag! Ideal level is 3600ppm, according to the SWG.

As you can see, there are many issues. What should I take care of first - lower pH or add shock to raise FC? Should I just SLAM to start over and guarantee no algae bloom? There's no visible signs of algae...

Also, what do you think of the pump and SWG settings? The pool guy thinks the SWG is somehow malfunctioning because it struggles to maintain FC... I read the TFP pool school articles on these but it didn't really give clear guidance... Seems like I should run them lower for longer, correct?

Hello,

I’m a new pool owner with a six month old saltwater pool. I’ve consistently had issues keeping CL and pH within range. I now understand pH will be a constant battle with the SWG and aeration pushing it up and must regularly add muriatic acid.

I have the Intellichlor Plus30 SWG. A recent Leslie’s test showed the salt level at 2900, zero CL, pH was high but everything else looked normal. The SWG measured salt at 3800 and lists 3600 as ideal.

Is it possible the SWG is throttling CL production because it erroneously calculates high salt? Should I call Pentair about this?
