How do unflappable poise and defence stance stack?

Reading them is not very clear to me.

I can see 3 versions (assuming you are in defense stance):

- close attacks have triple trouble until one lands at which point they will have double trouble

- close attacks have double trouble before and after one lands

- close attacks have double trouble until one lands at which point they will have a single trouble

Can you actually play something that feels like the Thing?

Been with a new group and we should soon start. The GM wants us to bring our own new heroes to play and I have always been fond of the "guy that can take whatever the big bad guys throw their way". As in they do not put up barriers, dodge hits but simply can take the hit head on.

But after reading the rules and seeing the sheet for Ben Grimm (which I consider one of the best examples of this trope and one of my favourite characters) I am not sure it would feel like it in actual play. Sturdy and damage reduction in general means you will still take quite the beating from any powerhouse and shrug off hits from the minions mostly. Hell sturdy actually just negates mighty and similar powers.

Am I wrong in my impression?
