My attempt at a nuanced take on La Ceuta events

I think there is a wider context most people miss:

- There is a dispute between Morocco and Algeria that has been going on for a long time: West Sahara

- Basically Morocco considers this area as theirs and so do a few others. Algeria and others consider that this area is autonomous and illegally occupied managed by Morocco. This is issue is very important to both courtries for various reasons and so it something they actively fight (diplomatically) over.

- Morocco has an habit of trying to bully Spain to force them to side with them by forcing migrants to rush La Ceuta.

From there it is fairly easy to see where I am going.

Until recently Spain was happy to just tell Morocco that they had no issue with Morocco’s claims, Morocco was happy and actively monitored the border. This obviously made Algeria angry.

On the 20th of July 2026 Sanchez visited Algeria to talk about various things including gas and trade. At no point Sanchez did anything to indicate that his position on West Sahara changed in any way, and chances are nothing changed in practice.

11 days later this happens.

It’s fairly obvious that Morocco is just being a dick about the meeting between Spain and Algeria.

The guys who passed are likely to be sent back to Morocco fairly soon and those who do pass to Europe will be working random dangerous and poorly paid illegal jobs within months.

Is this kind of things an issue that should be adressed?

Sure.

Is it something we should lose sleep and cry histerically about?

Honestly probably not.
