Judge Dredd re-read Part 16: Doomsday
Case Files 30 contains the whole Doomsday epic, all written by John Wagner. Doomsday is basically two different stories mashed together, with the second story being told twice from two different perspectives. The first story is the strongest and centers on Orlok from The Apocalypse War kidnapping Dredd and taking him to what remains of the Sovs to stand trial for the bombing that ended that war. The second and larger story is about criminal kingpin Narcos sending a huge robot army to destroy the judges, with the help of a booby trap to their service weapons. This we see first from Dredd’s perspective and then again from DeMarco of The Pit fame. I feel this wouldve worked better if they had interspersed these perspectives instead of doing one all the way through and then the other. The DeMarco section is definitely the stronger story of the two, because the Narcos stuff itself isn’t particularly interesting and the destruction feels mostly retread. Still, even lesser Wagner is better than the other writers around this time.
