How dark was LA in the 90s?

I know this depends on the area but I’ve heard stories from people I knew personally that grew up here during the 80s/90s about how violent much of the city was.

Is it exaggerated or do you think the general view of LA during that time is accurate?

Driving from LA to SF with a 6mo baby - take 5 or 101?

Please weigh in if you’ve done this! 101 looks longer but maybe easier to stop if baby is fussy?

Any tips?

Studio apartment, just received a 350 $ Utility bill, how is that possible ?

I live in a studio apt in hollywood, my utilities started growing every single month, i used to pay 80$, 3 years ago, but since utilities moved to Conservice, it's just more and more every single month, it went to 150, 200, 250, 300 and now i got a 350 $ utility bill ?

I honestly don't know how i am supposed to pay that, it will be 500 $ by the end of the year

Landlord says they don't deal with utilities, but Conservice only says that we are splitting all the bills in our building

is there like a renters protection or something that can help ? They charge me some random numbers

Where should we eat on our first night in West Hollywood?

We’re staying at the Chamberlain hotel in West Hollywood and we’re going to the comedy store for their headliners of the OR 9.30pm show. Looking for somewhere to eat, was originally going to eat at Mel’s Drive-In but apparently their food is mid lol. Another option I thought of was Jones but it’s a bit of a way from the comedy store.

As it’s our first night I think we’d like to find somewhere close to our hotel for convenience, and somewhere that’s close to the comedy store would also be a bonus. We’d be up for Mexican or classic American food, wouldn’t mind trying Korean but again it’s a bit far, we’d have to get an uber somewhere. Ideally we’d like somewhere within a 15-minute walk from the hotel.

Anyone have any recommendations for dinner for our first night?

What are LA parents doing with their babies this summer?

Hi all, summer has been brutal with the heat and added humidity. What are LA parents of babies under 6 months doing this summer? We're in the central part of the city, and our baby is currently about 4.5 months. I'm struggling with ideas of what to do during the day because babies this young aren't supposed to be exposed to harsh sunlight, and it isn't recommended to use sunblock on them yet. We're in central LA, wondering where I can take my baby during weekdays. We do walks after 6PM but have been limiting daytime outings. I'm the primary carer and still on leave for another month or so. Any shaded areas in the city for a nice stroll? Any and all tips and recommendations would be appreciated, thank you!

West side vet that you truly trust, is responsive, and will get you in on short notice?

I don’t care about price at this point. For the second time in my dogs short life I have taken him into the vet (two different ones), been told it was nothing and given nothing, had follow ups ignored, and landed in the ER in the middle of the night fearful for his life. This time it was pneumonia. I went in for the cough (through the Er vets primary care department that I switched to after issues with my last vet) less than a week prior and was told it would go away on its own. Well it didn’t go away on its own. It turned into pneumonia and required an overnight stay in the ICU where he was placed on oxygen.

Five days and no one has given me an update on his lab results either. They also finally responded today about coming in for his follow up X-rays to see if the treatment is working and say they can’t fit us in until next Thursday but they’ll “keep us in mind”. We can’t afford to wait that long to simply know if the antibiotics are working. My entire life is on hold because I’m terrified to leave him alone. I start a new job the following Monday and can’t afford to do this all over again if he needs a different treatment or antibiotics.

I just want a vet that I can trust and will actually respond timely rather than taking 5 business days per a single email. I need to get an appointment with the next week too. Anyone have a recommendation they trust?

How do people actually find Roommates in LA??

I have a really great 2 bed 2 bath in Mar Vista that I’ve been trying to fill for a couple months. The apartment is really large (around 1100sq ft) and the bedrooms are big. I’ve been posting in various Facebook groups with very very low response rates. I’ve tried joining as many Facebook groups as I can find, but still am not getting meaningful responses.

The rent is $1686 which I feel like is pretty reasonable for the area?

I’ve also posted on various roommate websites, but even when people reach out, they never respond to my messages.

I’ve literally never had this issue when I lived in San Francisco or San Diego, so I don’t think I’m the problem.

Can anyone provide any tips for actually finding a roommate in LA?

(Also if anyone’s curious to see the room, here’s the Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LARentals/s/fblzme5i16)

Keep getting to 3rd interviews. Why is finding job so hard here?

To preface I have ten years of directing and its gone pretty dry.

So I have been applying for any kind of video work, get interviews but can never land the job…

I am willing to do anything at this point. Basically going to be homeless. Any suggestions of where to look beside indeed? I feel like there is ten million people applying for everything.

And I even tried a sht job like best buy and couldnt get it…

It can‘t be my resume if I get the interview. I dont think its me, if I get to second and third interviews…

Finally got dream interview at a production company and the guy asked if we could go longer because he enjoyed talking so much. Then… I got the email…. nope…

Emailed all the hvac places asking If I can help as apprentice. No responses.

This is really depressing and stressful. I just wanna work.

What are the best spots to Kayak in Los Angeles?

I'm new to Kayaking and am looking for a spot to try it out with a group for my birthday next month. I'm debating between Long Beach Naples Canals or Newport Back Bay in Orange County.

Are either of these options too short of a route or a boring experience?

Does anyone have any other spot recommendations?

I’m looking for a dating coach who will watch me on a date or two and give me a critique or feedback?

I[41M] don’t know if this is a thing (and would need consent from the date probably) but I’ve been really struggling to find a relationship. I have no problem getting dates, in fact that’s the issue, I’ve been on like 55+ first dates in the past six months and none of them have made it to a relationship. I think less than 5 or 6 even made it to a second date.

I feel very strongly there’s something I’m doing wrong or something wrong with me… I’m handsome, smart, funny, sweet, but can’t get traction. I frequently get some version of “you’re really sweet/thoughtful/kind but I don’t feel a spark…” and it’s starting to weigh on me. I’ve asked a few women for feedback and it’s usually vague and not helpful but I was wondering if it’s like a thing where someone could watch me on a date and see if there’s things I’m doing that are ruining my chances… what’s so confusing is how few “bad” dates I’ve had. So many feel like they go well. Great conversation, flirty touching, usually kissing, and then next day get an ending text.

Is this a thing?

Best neighborhoods to locate a new martial arts school?

A friend is considering starting a dojo in LA.

EDIT: Judo and BJJ

What would be the best places to do this? There are so many dojos everywhere these days.

Places with perhaps lots of young families with disposable income and who would value this — and not completely overrun with competition yet? Thoughts?

Rose Bowl regulars and season ticket holders - how do you streamline the parking lot process?

I've been to literally every venue in Los Angeles, and most like the Hollywood Bowl, SoFi, the Coliseum, and the Forum, I've easily been able to identify where to park and where to not park. But for some reason, I've never been able to figure out the Rose Bowl. Parking at the Rose Bowl is an absolute nightmare and can be even worse than that. I've parked at the golf course and parked at the Parson building and taken the shuttle. But even that has been proven to be a challenge. I was planning to go see Guns N Roses on Sept. 5th, but the thought of dealing with the parking lot situation at the Rose Bowl can be very intimidating and off putting.

So for those of you who regularly attend games and events like concerts at the Rose Bowl, what's the easiest way that you have found to streamline the process? Is there anything that makes it easier to park there? Do you have any tips or tricks for us who don't go very often what to do?

Redondo+Hermosa hotel vs Santa Monica for Japanese tourists overnight visit?

Hey Best Coast fam. I have a female friend from Japan visiting LA for a night or two before she ventures eastward. She’ll be without a car rental but Ubers are ok. First time visiting w limited English. Wants to stay beachside-ish

I’d normally recommend a hotel in Santa Monica or Venice for a carless first-time trip to LA. But traveling solo from Japan, she might not be used to homeless encounters at night.

Is Hermosa/Redondo a better hotel play here? Are hotels there close to walking districts? I’d still recommend that she visit Venice and/or Santa Monica during the day.

Parking ticket?

I received a parking ticket for a city that I have never been to, nor was I in that city on that day. The car's color code on the ticket does not match my car. The license number on the ticket matches mine. Does anyone know how this happened? Can I contest this ticket that was in error?

Person in LA living in car with their dog 💔. Any resources?

I don’t know where to post this but hope someone can provide some insight. I live in an affluent city in San Gabriel valley , and for the past month there has been a person who parks their SUV in our neighborhood as they work nearby at a restaurant. They live in their car and keep their little dog in the car. They place those aluminum colored sun visors along the widows of the car but have no idea if that is enough for the poor dog. I see that they come and check in on the dog on their breaks, walk their dog in the evenings but I don’t how sustainable that is. This evening I heard the dog barking inside the car with the windows cracked open (I’m sure the owner is working). I feel so bad, they seem like nice people and the dog may be all they have left. I’m sure if I call the shelter they will take the dog from them.. I’m so torn. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’m worried about the dog, is there temp help for the dog?

Marriage Certificate in LA County: How long did you received in the mail box?

Hi guys, I recently got married to my husband in Norwalk, CA. We chose to get married at the Norwalk headquarters because we were hoping to receive our official marriage certificate sooner, since the completed marriage license wouldn’t need to be mailed back to Norwalk from another location.

However, when we asked at the window after the ceremony, the clerk told us that it could still take up to 6–8 weeks for the marriage to be recorded and for us to receive a certified copy.

Has anyone recently gotten married at the Norwalk office? How long did it actually take for your marriage to be recorded and for you to get a certified copy?

We need the marriage certificate for an immigration filing, so I’m trying to figure out whether there’s any way to get it sooner.

I know someone asked the same question about three years ago, but I’m hoping to get some more recent data points. Thank you so much!
