Good birding in Idyllwild?

Good birding in Idyllwild?

Recommended birding around Idyllwild, preferably easy to easy-moderate walk/hiking only?

Any birds in particular I should be on the lookout for that I don't get in LA? (Already adore quails.)

Stellar's Jay photo from last time I was up there!

New To AGT & Blown Away

My family and I just discovered AGT, and I'm equally excited that I have so many seasons to catch up on AND baffled that we are just now finding out about how great it is. These acts are (by and large) seriously, seriously talented. I've seen things I that have blown my mind. The audience is warm, positive, and encouraging. The whole show is fun and out-there and hopeful on a way I think the world really needs right now. And, best of all, it's something we can all watch together as a family.

If you have a favorite season for us to watch when this one's over, let me know!

Picky Boomer Dinner Options - Sherman Oaks/Studio City

For a woman who thinks seasoned fries are "spicy" and will ask 50 questions about just a burger on a menu. Must be "unchallenging food" aka sandwiches, salads, American classic entrees. Must have easy parking or valet and outdoor dining. Kids menu would be a plus, but honestly, the kids are the ones who will eat anything. Chain restaurants are fine.

ETA: looking for something "nice"-ish, it's for a birthday. Granville was perfect, but we took her there last time!

ETA2: Wood Ranch Burbank it is, thanks y'all! Everyone loves BBQ.

Autism and Birding: A Life Changing Hobby

I've traditionally been an indoor kid. All of my special interests have been media-based: books, music, and television. If you had told me that I'd be going outside at any possible opportunity starting in the last year of my 30s, I would have said you're crazy.

I was recommended "Listers" when it came out. By that point, I had acquired a passing curiosity towards birds by living right by a wetland and seeing tons of species every day, so I gave the movie a shot. Something immediately clicked with me. I'm not sure how many other autistic people can relate, but I saw a whole new world of FACTS to learn! LISTS to make! DATA to organize! NERDS to connect with! Nothing lights me up more.

While playing real-life Pokémon Go was what first sold me on birding, it's evolved (pun intended) into something so much more. Birding requires you to slow. Down. To connect with your environment in a way I had never considered before. To keep your ears and eyes open to what's around you, always. I had never realized how much was going on in the trees, in the sky, and on the ground around me at all times.

From a person who would rather die than go camping to a person who is desperate to explore other ecosystems and meet new birds, I find myself much more grounded than ever before. I feel like birding could be so influential and healing for many, many people, and I'm so glad that it seems to be gaining popularity among younger people who have been trapped from the jump by screens and social media. It gives you a wider perspective on the world

Why is the show so good?

For a prequel to an old movie, it is better than it has any right to be! Great performances, perfect nostalgia for elder millennials, an insane soundtrack (didn't expect to hear Halo Benders on TV in 2026!) Being from LA I appreciate the niche jokes, wonder if Seattle people feel the same.

Pantry Challenge!

About to meal plan for next week and need to save money by using lots of what's on hand. Here are some main items. I have most pantry staples (rices, flours, spices, oils, etc). It's for 2 adults.

2 lbs chicken breast (frozen)

Package of Chinese sausage

8 bratwurst links (frozen)

lots of eggs

half-used bags of frozen broccoli and frozen spinach

1 crown of broccoli

3 overripe tomatoes

1/2 pound small sweet peppers

masala paste

big hunk of daikon

2 carrots

shredded parm

1 can black beans

1 tin smoked trout

pork floss

ETA: thanks guys! For dinners I ended up doing:
-chinese sausage on rice with fried egg and bok choy (only needed to buy bok choy)
-cheddar broccoli baked potatoes (only needed to buy one potato)
-beer brats with peppers & onions, salad (only needed to buy lettuce)
-chicken alfredo, salad (only needed to buy alfredo sauce; will make the pasta from scratch)
-chicken, black bean, and cheese enchilads (only needed to buy enchilada sauce)

I'm doing a pasta salad for lunches using a bunch of those leftover veggies.

so not too bad! will save some of these suggestions for next week.

"Do you think they'll see me if I sit really still?"

Sidenote: I finally got my binoculars this week (after 9 months of biriding with my mortal eyes like a fool) and got to watch two crows feed their VERY LOUD fledgling my gift peanuts. Gosh I just love corvids.

Quails. Are. Hilarious.

I had to sneak up on this guy, haven't seen quails since I was a kid. They are so funny, the way they run around and yell their little heads off.

[Hiring] family as Lego minifigs for a shirt

Hello, I am looking for someone to draw my family of 5 as Lego minifigs. We're taking our kids to Legoland, and I want to make matching shirts for the trip. I'll provide reference photos and what I'd like each minifig to wear.

Budget is $100. Obviously, looking for someone who will not use Gen AI. Deadline would be mid-June.

What is "Jam and Charlie"?!

I'm rewatching series 11. To introduce Charlotte Ritchie and Jamali Maddix, Alex says, "Just like what a yuppie has for breakfast in the '90s, it's Jam and Charlie!"

WHAT does this joke mean?! - An American

Community main stay for 60+ years and excellent diner, Armon's in Eagle Rock, is falling victim to landlord greed and having their rent DOUBLED. Please support a great, locally owned restaurant of you can. They're open for dinner now. Don't sleep on the Thai specials!

I'm 5'6" and about 225lb, so bottoms (shorts especially) can be hard to find. I recently got a couple pairs of shorts from Bear Bottom Clothing, and I'm super happy. Short inseams + extended sizing, reasonable pricing, good quality stuff, free exchanges. The short inseams are especially appreciated because we have a "sky's out, thighs out" policy over here.
