I’m just getting into birding and am so hyped! Im curious what your setups are. Right now I’m just using my iPhone and the Merlin app and ebird. I’ll likely only add pictures for rare birds or birds I can get a good shot of. Do you always bring a camera or binoculars or scope you connect to your phone? Any other tools/equipment or apps you’d recommend?
So how accurate is this app? I’ve had northern cardinal pop up about 3-4 times recently, both at Whittier Narrows and at my home a few miles away. I would LOVE to see one like if it’s possible, so how hard should I be looking?
I was surfing down at the Seal Beach river jetty yesterday, and while I was walking to the waterline, I saw two large birds sitting on the lifeguard tower. At first, I thought they were seagulls, but they were larger (of a size somewhere between a seagull and a pelican) and had short falcon beaks. They had mostly white plumage, with some light brown on the heads and bits of brown on the wings. But I fear I didn't get enough identifying details, and I didn't have a camera because I was in my wetsuit.
I'm not a birder, but I have come to recognize the usual falcons, oystercatchers, pelicans, plovers, and various gulls with which I share the beach and waves, but these were new to me! I'd be curious if anyone has any ideas to which birds I saw, or if anyone in the area saw them as well.
This crow has been grounded in my yard & driveway all day. Its face is covered in warts & its body has these big boils on it. It’s walked all over my yard, including my kiddos play structure & other toys. It can’t seem to fly away. Animal Control has been notified, but they’re slammed, of course & can’t make it out here till later tonight, if at all. Should I be worried about this? The avian pox stuff that I read made it seem innocuous, but it definitely doesn’t seem that way with the way the bird is behaving.
I was walking in Eagle Rock and spotted a bird that looked so much like a female northern cardinal - broad, orange bill, a crested head, and mostly white body - but with a dark head. Also pretty sure we don't get Northern Cardinals here. Any ideas what it could've been?
Didn’t notice this guy until I started watching the crows who were going crazy for what I thought was no apparent reason haha
This subreddit inspired me to go to LA arboretum today - saw my first hooded oriole!
I especially love their bright yellow color in contrast with the light grey/green (Mexican Blue Hesper Palm) and the severity of their expression.
I went midday so didn’t expect to see many birds, but also saw bulbuls that another post recently pointed out!
Still holding out for cedar waxwings 🤞
He’s even pulling her “hair”.
what a fun day at torrey pines! the last baby just left the nest today
Sorry for the background noise, I was a park where kids were around, and didn't want to get any of them or anyone else in the video. Just for everyone to know where in SoCal this is, this is in South OC. I'm not an avid birder, but been getting into it slowly. Thanks in advance for any help!
