[Canucks] General Manager Ryan Johnson announced today that the #Canucks have agreed to terms with defenceman Jamie Oleksiak on a two-year contract worth $5M AAV.

What a tidy sequence from RJ.

Is that what having a good GM feels like?

EDIT: According to PuckPedia, the contract carries a modified no-trade with 12 teams. Very good!

Villeneuve who? I'm gonna watch Zeev Buium our true future 1D.

Everyone crying about the Canucks not taking XV should watch this a bit.

Jokes aside, Buium has a MUCH larger chance of actually being a #1 defenseman.

Side note: hope this season he changes back to his #8 jersey now that Garland is gone.

The meatier part of the draft is over. How do you evaluate this new management's first draft? Are you happy with their choices?

With their 4 picks they selected:

  • 3 - Caleb Malholtra
  • 24 - Adam Novotny
  • 33 - Brooks Rogowski
  • 41 - Niklas Aaram-Olsen

I think that's a perfectly good outcome. There's no home run swing in my opinion, but it was the first in (hopefully) at least a couple drafts where the Canucks select near the top and with extra picks.

It's pretty clear that the scouting team prioritized a couple traits such as character, compete, size and skating, with a certain degree of skill. However, I still wonder why they passed on Preston even at 41. Sekeres and Price mentioned he came up as arrogant in interviews (corroborated by more than 1 team), so if that's the case I'm fine. Part of what the Sedins and RJ are trying to do is build a culture, and I'm all for it.

Also, I'm kind of stoked they only picked forwards. We suddenly have a brand new prospect pool.

EDIT: I understand people being skeptical about Rogowski, and I share that sentiment. However, an important thing to consider is that he only committed to hockey 100% a couple years ago. For a good chunk of his life he was splitting his time between hockey and baseball. So my guess is that the scouts believed he could be a late bloomer and there may be more offense there than what meets the eye.
