This week's game is... Super Mario Sunshine!

I think we all saw this coming, but who cares? This was one of the most glaring omissions for a long time, and it's here now!

A Defense of Mario Clash's Soundtrack

So I've observed several people voice negative opinions of Mario Clash's soundtrack. And yeah, it's not an amazing soundtrack, but I personally didn't find it that bad.

Maybe I'm biased, since this was the only one of the five VB soundtracks I had any prior experience with. But I actually kinda like Mario Clash's music. It's not the most memorable in the world, but the compositions are nice and catchy, befitting of Mario, and I really like the soundfont of the game as well. The soundtrack reminds me a lot of 80s Namco arcade games, in a good way. The second Stage BGM track in particular is my favorite of Mario Clash's offerings.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this one, or maybe there are more people who share my opinion. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions in the end.

First ever deathless run on the Switch 2 game!

This is also a new high score for me, and was close to an all medals run! I did this to pick up some medals for expert mode.

Okay, I think Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave might be the best Special Release yet.

I'm listening to it right now, and I've been blown away by what I've heard. I expected the music to at least be good, but I legit think this has some of the very best Fire Emblem music on the app so far! The Blaze - Cycle of the Sun, True to His Colors, and Queen's Gambit are particular highlights, but this is all fantastic! Assuming this is replacing a full soundtrack drop this week, that will be the only black mark against this Special Release. Go give it a listen, whether you're a Fire Emblem fan or not!

Might I be the only one who thinks Virtual Boy Wario Land has a bad soundtrack?

I listened to the whole thing a while ago, and I was aghast at how irritating I found it to be. It's extremely repetitive, some tracks are looped for more than they should be on Nintendo Music (ESPECIALLY Hidden Room 1), and while I am usually quite receptive to 8-bit(-ish) soundfonts, I felt VBWL's soundfont made some tracks worse. There are still a few good tracks in there (Stage 3 BGM is my favorite), but on the whole I found this to be the worst of the Virtual Boy soundtracks.

Does anyone else share this opinion? And if you don't, feel free to make your case for why this soundtrack isn't as bad as I found it to be.

A "New arrivals" section has been created in Nintendo Music to highlight the July releases

They made a new announcement in the app highlighting this new section, which contains every new release in July except the Free Roam tracks. I could've sworn this "new arrivals" section existed previously and used to just have whatever was most recently added at the time, but it could just be a Mandela effect.

As a refresher, we got the following in July:

  • A special release of Rhythm Heaven Groove
  • F-Zero 99
  • (The rest of) Donkey Kong Bananza
  • A special release of Splatoon Raiders
  • Mario's Tennis
  • Teleroboxer
  • Galactic Pinball
  • Mario Clash
  • Virtual Boy Wario Land

This week's game is... Splatoon Raiders as a special release...

I would like to first establish that I am one of the biggest defenders of Special Releases - or at least, I was. There's a clear and understandable rule in place that a game has to be out for some time before it can be considered for Nintendo Music, lest things get spoiled and sales get eaten into. Special Releases are the only way around that, and with this in mind, I've really appreciated them for giving previews to upcoming or recently-released soundtracks, especially when they're supplements to full game drops.

All that said... I *really* didn't want this game to get a Special Release, primarily because we already had one for Rhythm Heaven Groove earlier this month. This makes this the first month with two Special Releases, which is especially frustrating given that they've made a habit of using these to replace full soundtrack drops. At least these two Special Releases are cushioned by MKWorld Free Roam drops, but DK Bananza is starting to look like a bright outlier in an otherwise mid month for Nintendo Music.

This week's game is... Donkey Kong Bananza!

Had a feeling they'd upgrade to a full release this week since this is the game's one-year anniversary. Excellent addition, although I need to beat the game before I listen to any of this. They even tell us to activate spoiler prevention if we want to avoid spoilers!

This does continue the excessive Switch family focus, but at least it's Switch 2 this time.

Good Morning playlist - Any suggesstions?

I thought it would be a nice idea to create a "Good Morning" playlist to complement sleep playlists. I'm looking for tracks that I'd describe as light and soft, yet a touch upbeat and happy.

I have a few tracks on here already, but I'd like to add some more. What are your suggestions?

The current playlist:
