Ingredient Showdown: Salicylic Acid vs Benzoyl Peroxide

When we talk about acne fighting ingredients, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are by far some of the most famous ingredients out there (shout out to retinoids though 👀).

Salicylic acid works by exfoliating inside the pores, helping to clear out excess oil, dead skin, and congestion that leads to blackheads and breakouts.

Benzoyl peroxide on the other hand is an antibacterial ingredient that targets and kills acne causing bacteria on the skin.

Both work in completely different ways but which one are you picking for your acne and why?

And while you’re at it, drop some of your favourite salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide products below 👇

For me it'd be my skin barrier finally healed when I stopped using a thousand different actives at once and started using products with barrier supporting ingredients like ceramides, panthenol, squalane and hyaluronic acid :)

Clarification on recent moderator changes

Hey everyone, Anders here.

I started this sub for a pretty simple reason. Fixing my skin barrier genuinely changed things for me, and I wanted a little corner of the internet to share that and help other people find the same relief. So watching the last few hours play out has been hard, not because people disagree (disagreements are a natural part of any discussion forum) but because it's pulled us so far from why this place exists which is to discuss all things skincare related. Honestly, I take a real share of the blame for that, and I just want to be as honest as I can with everyone about it.

Firstly, I just want to clarify that the change to the mod team was not purely based on a hasty reaction to a single comment or post which it may have initially seemed. It came down to a longer standing difference in expectations around the mod role, which came to a head this week. That decision stands.

With that being said, it's important to acknowledge where I went wrong. In trying to be transparent, I spoke too quickly before I'd properly reflected on how my words would be interpreted. I was not clear in the way I communicated and my initial response blurred two separate issues: a disagreement over one moderation decision, and a broader difference in moderation philosophy. Because of that, it understandably gave the impression that a moderator had been removed solely because of this one incident and that I had taken a position on the disagreement. That wasn't an accurate reflection of the situation, and I take responsibility for creating that confusion.

I also recognise that as the person leading this community, it's my responsibility to communicate decisions carefully, especially when they involve people who have volunteered their time to help this sub. I did not do a great job at this and for that I'm genuinely sorry.

On the mod role going forward, I believe that mods should uphold community standards. They should not engage in personal disagreements through moderation actions and removals should be based on conduct.

On the note of conduct and what I failed to recognise in my previous post is that this standard must work both ways. I believe that whatever someone chooses to do with their own face, they shouldn't get accused of having gross or shameful reasons for it. If you get botox, no one here should suggest you're doing it for creepy reasons. If you decide against it, no one should look down on you for that either. Your choices about your own skin are yours, and we should not be handing each other ugly motives over them. That's the whole standard.

As much as I wish that I was a Reddit god that moderated everything flawlessly, admittedly, I'm not going to get this perfect. I run this sub as primarily one person who genuinely cares a lot, not a PR department, and I'll occasionally move too fast or word things badly, like I did today. But I'll always own it when I do.

I've definitely learnt a lot from this experience and I promise that I will continue to better myself to be the mod that you guys deserve.

Thank you for all your support up to this point 💙

Community update: Changes to the mod team

Hi SkinbarrierLovers,

Anders here, the person behind this sub!

I always want to be as transparent as possible so I just wanted to inform everyone that due to recent events, there have been some changes within the mod team, and we are now moving forward without a member whose approach and values were not aligned with the direction we want for this community.

We as the mod team want to sincerely apologise for any confusion or unpleasant interactions that may have occurred as a result of this. In line with this, I have also reached out to the individual directly involved and personally apologised to them and resolved things.

I want to make it clear that this sub has and always will be a space where open, respectful discussion is encouraged, even when topics are complex or opinions differ. Our focus going forward is simply to keep building a space where we can learn from each other in a respectful way, without shying away from topics that might be difficult. Just like the world, our sub is nuanced, and we welcome that nuance.

If anyone has concerns or wants to reach out, we’re always here via modmail and happy to listen.

Thank you all again for being part of our tiny skin barrier obsessed corner of the internet, it wouldn't be the same without you 💙

EDIT:

After taking some time to reflect, I’ve addressed this incident in a full clarification here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SkinbarrierLovers/comments/1uh3dpz/clarification_on_recent_moderator_changes/

I understand there’s a lot of strong feeling around this, but I’ve explained the situation as clearly as I can there. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

To all my acne scar sufferers, what ACTUALLY helped fade your scars?

For all my acne scar sufferers out there, what actually helped your skin the most?

I'm currently going through the process of healing my own acne scars and I'd say that consistently using my retinal with good barrier repair products have helped a lot!

It's definitely a slow process though hahaha...

To all my oily skin sufferers, what ACTUALLY got your oil under control?

For all my oily skin types out there, what actually helped your skin the most?

For me, it'd be layering a thin but hydrating toner before my moisturiser. This changed the game for me in terms my oiliness :)
