Choosing between a strong barrier and pimples

Do you ever feel like you have to choose between these? For me, my barrier thrives the most when I’m using several layered products designed for the barrier. It looks strong, not red, and glowy. But it seems like the trade off is that layering products almost always leads to random pimples.

I have type 2 rosacea.

If I simplify my routine, the pimples go away, but I get redness and lose all the glowiness.

For reference, I’m using Vanicream cleanser, Tower 28 SOS spray as a toner, Skin1004 Centella ampoule, I’m from Mugwort essence, haruharu wonder probiotic essence, and Dr Althea 345 moisturizer and Vanicream SPF. At night I try to use tret even once a week, but my skin gets irritated by it very quickly.

Just curious if anyone else has this experience!

Is Hiya sunscreen as good as their vitamins?

I saw this sunscreen at my best friend’s house today and she was raving about it for her kids. Every summer feels like a struggle trying to find one my kids will actually tolerate, one burns their eyes, another leaves a white cast and another irritates them because of the smell. We already use Hiya vitamins and love them, so now I’m curious if anyone here has tried their sunscreen for kids and what your experience has been?

What skincare myth took you embarrassingly long to unlearn?

This one's easy for me hahaha I was on the "dry out your acne" train for the longest time. My routine was 0 hydration and all harsh hitting actives like azelaic acid, adapalene, benzoyl peroxide.

No wonder it took so long for my skin to get better...

If you could go back 5 years in time.. what skincare advice would you give yourself?

What would you tell your younger self about skincare if you could go back in time?

If I could go back 5 years and give myself some skincare advice it would probably be...

  • Find products with ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids
  • Chia Seed Oil is goated
  • Get a strategy for how to introduce new products
  • PDRN sounds crazy, but it will change your dry and sensitive skin
  • Don't be afraid of retinoids, "just" use them responsibly
  • ...I'd probably also drop my entire current routine on my younger self, lol

Restored a damaged barrier after doing the most

I have been a long time user of Tretonin 0.5 for the past five years ish. As skincare has become very popular and influencer trends take over social media many of us continue to seek perfection and damage our fragile barriers. I would watch a video and do more and more and consistently fuck up my barrier. Adding a growth factor serum gave me massive cystic acne. Then to fix that I added on azaelic acid to help the hyperpigmentation. Then facial oils to combat the worsening dryness. All on top of Tretonin…an extremely potent rx. Water would literally burn my face and I knew I had fucked up. I stopped Tret for three months and used differin but missed the glow. I slowly incorporated Tret back and dropped azaelic acid. Many ppl on Reddit love aza but I realized I have very sensitive and dry skin and also live in the desert and needed to cut out any other actives back. I stopped double cleansing unless I wear makeup which is about 1-4 times a month. On nights I use Tret I literally just use lotion then Tret instead of a million layers of toner. All of these things seem common sense but for many of us acne forms as a result of a damaged barrier and we do the most to combat it. So happy with where my skin is now ♥️

Routine:

Am: wash with water

Heveblue PDRN toner (love this !!!)

Haru haru probiotic toner

Zeroid intensive cream

Haru Haru wonder spf

Pm:

Vegan yam root cleanser

Cosrx snail mucin

Haru Haru toner

Aestura atobarrier

X3 a week Tret with only the aestura atobarrier. I will probably not increase my usage as I am happy with my skin and previously was doing ever other day

Beta glucan hydrating serum
Vanicream moisturizer
elta SPF

PM:

Micellar water cleanse
Thayer milky cleanser
Beta glucan hydrating serum
Vanicream moisturizer

Caveman regime?

I’ve majorly messed up my skin barrier from inflammation in my body then also doing tons of topical things to mess it up. Including a botched laser treatment at a med spa (never again at a med spa).

I stripped everything back to just vanicream lotion and vanicream liquid soap once a day just at night. Nothing else. Not even sunscreen because it burned and broke me out, just a hat and staying out of sun. I have been doing this for two months with no improvement my skin is getting worse actually. (Lotion is great face wash isn’t)

Realized that this face wash was stripping my skin. I didn’t even realize because it was supposed to be the most gentle.

My skin is so inflamed, red, dehydrated, horrible texture, oily, etc.

Should I:

  1. try caveman till my barrier heals
  2. try Aveeno Calm and Restore wash once a night

Hi ya’ll!! so i think because i workout & sweat a ton i had small closed comodones. I used SA on top of my forehead & noticed one of them became larger while others disappeared. Barrier damage routine

I have recently updated my routine to make it as MINIMAL as possible as it’s super damaged and reactive to any products and was reacting to water at some points.

I am now using Avene control moisturizer in mornings if it feels dry (no washing/water) and Cereve gentle cleanser at night followed by Avene control moisturizer.

I do not use barrier serums etc as my skin feels too damaged and sensitive for products. My skin does feel less itchy with slightly less redness but my chin is still irritated and one of the flaky patches bled overnight. Why?

Does this routine sound ok to try and reset my skin? Everyone says skin is self healing so I expect new cells to regenerate while I keep it minimal.

Damaged skin barrier itching and tingling?

Has anyone here experience itching, tingling and dryness from a damaged skin barrier? I’ve only been rinsing my face with water for the past 3 days since it’s so sensitive right now, but my skin gets red/splotchy and itchy afterwards :(

What do you all think about Torriden?

The ONLY moisturizer my skin likes is La Roche Posay Dermallergo. It's been this way for years. I've also been able to use Bioderma sensibio cleanser and one of their moisturizers (can't remember the name) I'd really love to find even 1 other product that my dry, sensitive skin can handle. Dermallergo is like $35 for the tiniest bottle and I'd love something more cost effective

How to fix a year-long broken barrier?

Hi there!

I've been trying to recover my skin barrier for a year but have been feeling very hopeless. It has improved since the damage first occurred but is still feels constantly dehydrated, fragile, and uncomfortable, sometimes painful.

The texture of my skin seems to have changed too - with more visible pores on my cheeks. Is that normal, will it go back to the way it was before?

So I'm wondering if I should stick to my current routine or make some changes.

Current routine:

AM

Cleanse with water

Avène cicalfate serum

Avène Tolerance soothing recovery cream

2 drops Squalane (once in a while a dab of Avène cicalfate cream instead of Squalane)

PM

Cleanse with Bepanthen Sensicontrol Daily Gentle Wash Gel

Repeat all AM skincare

Skin type : combination leaning towards dry, but clog-prone.

I've tried many things. All attempts at adding SPF have made the problem worse. I've tried Vaseline twice and think it might help but I'm afraid it will make my pore issue worse and also require more cleansing.

So I'm wondering:

Do I need a ceramide cream to fix this? (In Europe)

Do I need a heavy barrier like vaseline?

Really I'm kind of scared of putting more stuff on my face. Could minimising all of it be a solution? Less cream/oils but also less cleansing.

Or just determinedly stick to my current routine?

I recently saw a dermatologist and she didn't give me any clear plan to solving this. Said that skin rebalances with different approaches for everyone and there is no one solution. So I concluded that I just have to figure it out on my own - trial and error.

Looking for some help and hope here.

Thanks!

Help!! I completely messed up my barrier!

Guys! I'm crying over here, I stupidly, stupidly tried to get a facial and 5 minutes into it, my face started burning. My cheeks and chin are so burnt, and my face is hot! What can I do?? I'm in the US, so please do not suggest any products from another country. I'm on a Tretinoin/Azelaic acid/ Clindamycin Phosphate compound and was working SO hard to get my face clean. Now I'm in tears!

Is this typical adapalene purging? Week 10

FOR REFERENCE: left pic is today, right is 1 week ago

Hi! Long story short, I was prescribed 0.3% adapalene March 6. I didn’t have much purging in the beginning, and looking back at photos, I feel sad I was so insecure with my skin.

I feel like not much progress has been happening with my skin, and continued to use BHA, AHA, BPO, and AzA. I now realize I was DESTROYING my skin barrier, so last week I decided to drop all other actives besides the adapalene.

I use it 4-5 times a week, and am just now getting many bumps—some active, some closed comedones—and feel SO defeated. I’m past the 10 week mark and am wondering if this looks like typical purging for this time? Feeling like giving up, but hoping the home stretch is soon. For background, I have never had acne of any kind before last year, and it came back in January after I stopped Differin 0.1% (didn’t realize you were supposed to continue for a while)

______ completely changed my skin (Fill in the blank!)

For me it'd just be simply taking care of my skin barrier and properly hydrating it.

I've got acne prone skin so for the longest time I was just destroying it with every acne targeted active you can think of...

[product request] I need help for skin texture

I have terrible skin texture! I’m so self-conscious and getting pretty depressed about it. I’ve tried all kinds of things and nothing seems to work. Tret, glycolic acid, PDRN, glow recipe, vitamin C, cheap moisturizer, high end moisturizers. I’m lost.
