Pleasantly surprised by 'Snuff'

Still on the ongoing readthrough of All The Discworld Books, and I read 'Snuff' last weekend. I'd seen other people on here say it wasn't that good because of the Embuggerance affecting things, so I went in with low expectations. Well... it was a lot better than I'd expected from those comments. Yes, it's not one of his absolute best and you can see where things are getting a little blurred around the edges, but Pterry still had what it took. Thoroughly enjoyed getting one last decent Vimes book.

(And, sadly, I think that probably is going to prove to be the last good one; I'm currently slogging through 'Science of Discworld IV' and there is absolutely no doubt that the Embuggerance had smeared his brain by then. So, I'm braced for the last two not being that great either. Though DON'T TELL ME because I still want to remain as unspoiled as possible as I get to each book. Nearly at the end.)

Edit: 'I still want to remain as unspoiled as possible as I get to each book' ALSO applies to comments about the contents of the remaining books (Raising Steam, The Shepherd's Crown, and for that matter anything from about Chapter 14 onwards of Science Of Discworld IV). Even general ones about plot or which characters show up. Please don't do that, or at least hide those bits with spoiler tags. Please. I've only got one chance to read the last Pterry books for the first time, and I'm not even looking at the jacket blurbs. I know which mini-series each of them belongs to, and I don't want to know anything else till I find it out for myself. Thanks.

Thoughts on whether 'Dodger' is worth reading?

As mentioned elsewhere, I'm doing a full readthrough of the DW books prior to the upcoming Convention. Just wondering about the non-Discworld books, and in particular 'Dodger', as I've read several of the others at one point or another.

In general I haven't enjoyed the non-DW books as much, but 'Nation', which I only read because Pterry said so many times that it was his own favourite, did turn out to be an exception and worth the read. I've read the first chapter of 'Dodger' as it was included at the end of my copy of ISWM, and wasn't too grabbed. Of course, at the end of the day it's a Pterry book so it can't be that bad, but do people see it as a definite not-to-be-missed or is it one that most people aren't that fussed about?

Coming down the home stretch...

After sixteen years, I am finally - short of the Apocralypse overtaking us all in the meantime - going to be back at the Discworld Convention this summer. Ticket and hotel room booked. So, several months back, I started on a full readthrough of the Discworld books in preparation (publication order). I've also been reading the MarkReads commentary as I go along, to add to the experience. I just finished 'Science of DiscWorld III'; six more books to go.

It's been an amazing experience. Getting started was hard because, although I was determined to do them all in order from the start, I'm one of the people who never was a big 'The Colour Of Magic' fan, so I had to push to get through that... but oh, so worth it. There were some that I never did get round to reading, so it's been a mixture of rediscovering the ones I loved and discovering others for the first time. In particular - because of being caught up in the exhaustion of parenting, and not having much mental capacity for embarking on new books - I read almost none of his later books. Of the six left, the only one I've already read is 'I Shall Wear Midnight', so all the rest will be completely new to me. (Nobody spoil anything.) This is going to be a wild ride. Two months to go!
