Initial Impressions
I had some thoughts I wanted to share about my dad's new Uncharted! As someone whose family has owned a new Prius for a few months now, I have gotten familiar with Toyota parts.
To start, I was annoyed how if the front seats are down the rear passengers get no legroom under the front seats (in our Prius we don't have this issue when the seat is down, headroom is more the issue and thankfully this car has a little more, also it's not low to the ground), however thankfully when you bring it up there is space. Overall headroom and legroom are on the tighter side which I was worried about when I found out my dad made this decision without even having me test sitting in it first, but thankfully either me sitting in the front seat leaves me enough space, and even the back is fine if the front passenger takes up less space, (which is the case with my mom) which I can't say with our Prius.
One thing I found interesting was how while our Prius has sensors to turn on the interior lights, the Uncharted has physical buttons to match the off-road theme I guess. For one thing I haven't gotten programming the Homelink buttons to work for the life of me, also it's strange how the headlight washing button doesn't work. I'll have to double check there's even windshield washer fluid but I didn't see an error light. Also it's nice to see two rear seat pockets compared to one in our Prius. I was also curious, what are these two blank buttons even for? There's another one on the left side. Random other neat thing, pushing the media power button seems to toggle on and off the gauge cluster screen when the car is off which is neat.
And for for my biggest complaint unfortunately - The screen/software. Upon first seeing the screen, It was a cool surprise how big it was. However, I was quite disappointed when I turned it on and saw both how big the font size is with there being no way to decrease it I don't think, and also how the climate control has huge buttons and it takes up a third of the screen with no way to hide it and use the rest of the screen space. Lastly in terms of the software, while it's nice to see Subaru implement turning on and off the safety features from the main screen (unlike our Prius where you have to do it all on the tiny annoying gauge cluster screen), there are some unpolished software things like in the attached images.
A couple more things - My dad commented that he loves the suspension compared to our previous car which is great. He also was annoyed by how both regen braking settings seem to reset when you start the car, and how the minus button increases regen breaking while the plus button decreases it. Also while it was cool to see the interior ambient lighting settings, it was annoying to learn you can only adjust them and a bunch of other settings with the car off and parked. Another thing I wanted to add that in a week of driving, my dad only drove like 50 miles! This big battery seems to work well for him and he definitely doesn't need more range, and we don't take road trips too often but we'll have to see how it works during them.
Furthermore I do like the camera system and the 360 degree view which some manufacturers don't even have, but the camera view button unfortunately seems to only be available at slower speeds I think. Interestingly while the Uncharted has the same style of rear door handle as the Prius, it's physical rather than electronic, which I personally do not prefer with how the Prius has an easy to use mechanical backup. Lastly I wanted to add that I love the light up Subaru logo in the front :)
