How do I Change the Background Color when Zooming and Erasing to Transparency/Alpha?

By default, when zooming and erasing to transparency GIMP automatically changes the background color to a sort of middle grey tone. I'm working with some black and white images and the middle grey tone just muddies what I've erased.

Edit: To clarify, I'm speaking about the automatic color that GIMP adds over the transparency grid when you zoom in on pixels. Not the autofill color you get when erasing without an alpha channel, and not a second layer beneath the primary one with another color. Although that method came to mind when I was asking this question, and definitely fixes my main issue. I'd still like to know if it's possible to change that weird zoom-mask-thing.

What Are the Dangers of Upgrading from Ubuntu 24.04 to Ubuntu 26.04 Before the Point Release?

I want to run this upgrade to fix a bug that happened to me recently, which I’ve heard is fixed in that release.

But before I do. I’d like to know a bit about what can go wrong.

Fixing Nautilus Thumbnails on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

So, I recently ran the updates for this version of Ubuntu and now none of my image files have thumbnails. This bug seems common enough to have a few different fixes around, I'm just not sure which one to go with given that it's apparently a security issue and that I don't really understand what the commands I'm using will do. That and I find the Ubuntu forums poorly organized, confusing, and unhelpful.

I also found this "ffmpegthumbnailer gstreamer1.0-libav" program that will allegedly fix the issue. But, again, its a security issue and installing random programs isn't safe.

Finally, if your advice starts with "Change to the Interim Release version", thank you for your desire to help, but I might not be polite in the reply. I use LTS and will not be changing.

PS I'm using Nautilus 46.4 and tried Nemo 6.0.2. Since I had the same issue on Nemo I know its not Nautilus causing this.

Thanks in adavance.

Edit: On further research, ie remembering the Ubuntu App Center is a thing, it appears "ffmeg" isn't malicious but is meant to generate thumbnails for videos.

Does the Alex Verus Series Get Better After Burned?

Spoilers for that series up til that novel. Duh.

I have never loved the opening of a novel more than I loved the opening of this one. Which makes it particularly galling that I hate the end of this novel exactly as much as I do.

So. Here I am. Asking to be spoiled because I do want to finish the series. I hate leaving these things unfinished. But Jesus-fucking-Christ. There is such a thing as overkill with antagonists and the end of this novel polevaulted over my line. It’s rare that a character in a narrative brings out visceral hatred like this. And usually sexual assault needs to be an element for a narrative to hit me like me like this, but Jesus-fucking-Christ this is such an equal removal of agency.

Long story short, I’m not going to finish this unless something seriously unpleasant happens to Mordon and Richard. Feel free to tell me any detail you like. Otherwise I’m just not going to be able to get past.

Edit: Spoilers will not ruin my ability to enjoy the series. I’m asking for them.

Confused, Selected Layer (Not) Visible

Edit: Re-written because I dont beleive I described my issue properly.

I have a project with multiple layers, but only seem to have one layer selected. However, when I interact with that layer nothing happens. The tool tip dialog at the bottom of the screen says “A Selected Layer is Not Visible”. And I’m not sure why as I only have the one layer selected (at least according to the layers menu).

The layer does have a little open eye, and the eye is not crossed out. (Not to mention the layer is visible in the project window).

I tried restarting the program without saving the project (as I had only just started working on it for the day). But when I restarted the project the issue persisted.

I also tried deleting a seperate (empty) layer, using the “delete selected layers” dialog in the layers menu. Since that should delete all active layers. But I’m still getting the same “a selected layer is not visible” message when I return to the original layer.

I feel like I’m missing something obvious, but I could not tell you what.

So, lately I’ve been seeing members only videos in my feeds. It’s really irritating. Particularly since I’m already paying for YouTube. I’m not randomly gonna pay more just for access to one video, even from creator I like.

Personally, I already feel like it’s gating off what would otherwise be standard content. It’s one thing if the material is actually special, but a lot of what i see is just something that would have been a normal video before this.

It’s just frustrating.
