Machine Games should make the next Thief
After playing Indiana Jones for a few hours, I think Machine Games is the perfect developer to take another crack at a modern reboot of Thief. This game's levels are sprawling, vertically-interconnected, aesthetically varied spaces with multiple large buildings to explore, secret notes to find, and optional stories to follow.
This is the first game that's come even close to making me feel like I'm playing Thief 2 again.
Indiana Jones' stealth systems aren't particularly robust, but I chalk that up to the focus of this particular game rather than an inability on the studio's part.
Knocking out two guards before walking into this emerald green chamber (in the screenshot) with a club in hand felt for just a second like I was home again.
I feel like Thief's aesthetic in the 2010s reboot and even Deadly Shadows was reduced to this sorta monotone, generic goth-fantasy look, but in those first two games it was so much more diverse and nuanced than that! There were elements of steam punk, art deco, industrial, even tomb-raiding levels!
If another Thief reboot happens, I really hope Machine Games is tapped to do it.
