There's a number of big, decades-old TOHs on public land near me (East of England). In addition to the those, suckers show up rather regularly as well as entirely new plants. With all that said, I've had ample opportunity to smell the leaves, branches and the rest. And I've got to say, it didn't smell bad. Like, honestly, it smells like some kind of spice. The old plants are very mild, and the younger ones are quite nice. It's certainly nothing like "rancid peanut butter" or the other things that people liken it to. During heavy rain, the big trees might smell a bit sweaty. I haven't been able to figure out if that's the TOH or other things in the area. But it's not a particularly strong angel and you really have to be amongst the trees to smell it. The younger ones also only really smell when you crush and sniff them.
Just curious if anyone else thinks this? You know, that the spicy smell is actually alright? They have a strong and distinct scent when tissues are damaged, one that's certainly more present on the younger growths than older ones, but focusing on their so-called "bad smell" at all seems to misrepresent the greater issue at hand.
