SPITONOLACTONE - SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS - help!

Hi everyone, 34F here.
Diagnosed with PCOS at age 17--> Prescribed with BC (YAZ), which I took for about 10 years.

At 27 (year 2020) I stopped taking BC and focused on managing my PCOS through diet and exercise.
I had pretty good results — my cycles became regular, I stopped developing ovarian cysts

The main lingering issue of this 6 year without BC has been slightly elevated testosterone, which gradually led to AGA (androgenetic alopecia) and acne (not severe at first, but it became worse when I turned 31)

Last year for hormonal acne and hair loss, my dermatologist prescribed SPIRO.
- started at 25 mg (Sept 2025) and gradually increased it each month up to 100 mg.

In the first 4 months, I had some manageable side effects — I just needed to stay more hydrated and got used to going to the bathroom more frequently, and some bloating.

However, after increasing to 100 mg, everything changed:

My cycle went from a normal 28 days to a 56 days (the last one)
-

  • I started having strong JOINT PAIN every morning specially in my hands (both), just arthritis like. The pain gets much better throughout the day, but it comes back at night and again when I wake up.

It has been two weeks now of daily pain (AINES didn’t Help)

  • Pelvic inflammation (my last Pap smear even came back with signs of inflammation so I need to repeat it)
  • Sharp pains in my breasts and general discomfort
  • Itching on my skin (at this point I’m not sure if this might be psychosomatic after reading so many posts, but the joint pain is def real).

I’ve been reading some concerning posts here about people developing autoimmune issues (like lupus or AR) after taking spiro, and I’m honestly feeling terrified about it.

Just to add — I had my potassium, magnesium, and sodium levels checked this week and everything came back within normal range. Same with my thyroid hormone levels, vit D and iron (got everything testes)
I’ve a very healthy diet, and was a very active person (until these pains started)

I’m really frustrated., SPIRO has done amazing things for my hair and skin — it’s been a huge boost for my self-esteem and mental health (I was in a really low place because of my hair loss and acne). So I’m really conflicted about stopping it.

I've got an appt with a Rheumatologist next Monday.

Any advice, experiences, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much 💛
