Brooder, ramp, and my runt

Hi everyone! I’m a new quail mom. I hatched these guys 10 days ago. I’ve just transitioned their food to be a little higher up. I’ve read that quail will not use ramps (or very unlikely to use). I decided to give it a shot anyway. I wanted them to have a bit more free roaming space while in the small brooder. Their food and water bowls were taken up so much space. They were also getting pine shaving all in their water. I tried to show them the ramp. Not all knew how to use it and I think the ones that figured it out occasionally forgot, so I ended up putting them up onto the feeding area multiple times a day by hand. I had to make sure everyone was getting food and water. I ended up swapping the metal ramp for a wooden one and that did the trick! They all seemed to respond way better to that style. They only use it to go up, never down. They like to fall off the sides of the heat plate when they finish eating and drinking. I’ll have to blast it frequently with a hose to keep it from getting gross. Thats okay. This is just a temporary set up. I’m not going to use this ramp for their outdoor habitat. Yes, I know, I need to clean the walking bridge, cleaned it 2 days ago and it needs to be cleaned again.

Please note the runt. He doesn’t really seem to be gaining weight or developing adult feathers yet. He’s way smaller than the others. He seems healthy. Haven’t witnessed any bullying. How normal is it that he’s just so darn small? (I say he 😅 no idea really)

Appreciation Post & My Life Recently

Hi everyone, just wanted to say how truly grateful I am for all of the members that make this community!
I can’t believe how much this community has grown in the past few years. I’m glad to provide a space thats conducive to learning and sharing. Thank you for being vulnerable in your posts, thank you for sharing the highs and the lows, thank you for being authentic with experiences and with your photos. I want to encourage everyone to upload more photos when you posts, I notice two photos is pretty typical. I would love to see more! I look forward to seeing many more posts from you guys. Thanks for being a part of r/DIYaesthetics!

Lots has been happening behind the scenes in my life. I’ve been spending more quality time with my mom which has been really nice. She really likes birds and gardening like I do however she’s not good at gardening. Those are her words, not mine! We like to sit outside and bird watch together. I’m obsessed with hummingbirds! Idk why but they completely fascinate me. I’m also a huge fan of cardinals. My grandmom and I used to bird watch together. I remember spending hours watching her feeders from the wooden ledge in the dining room. I would get so excited every time a new bird would show up. I’d rush to my grandma and we’d look up the bird together in one of her many books. Those were wonderful memories that I’ll always cherish. I feel like she knew me better than anyone. For one of my birthdays as a child, she bought me some dirt, bulbs, and some pots. It was one of the best gifts. I often sit and look at my garden and wish so badly that I could share photos with her. I really think out of all of her grandkids, I ended up the most like her. Thats what my mom said to me one day and the older I get, the more true I think that is. I think my grandmothers passing really helped my mom and I grow closer. She only lives about an hour and a half away but thats a lot of driving to make when we both have stuff going on. When I do see her, I try to make the most of it. I try to make memories that I can look back on.

Two of my friends recently lost their cats. Some people may see them as just cats but to my two friends, these cats were family. One friend’s cat passed of liver cancer. She withered away to skin and bones before finally had to be put down. We had a celebration of life party for her. It was a completely devastating month and half. My friend is trying to push forward but his anguish is hard to ignore. He often sits quietly, says nothing but his eyes water and I can still sense the pain. I’ve talked to him about the idea of getting a new cat. I think something new to love and cherish could be really helpful. In the meantime he’s planning another vacation which I think he could really use right now.

I’m growing fresh herbs this year. I go nuts for fresh cilantro and green onions. I eat Korean ramen several times a week. I almost always add cilantro and green onions. I didn’t like cilantro growing up but I sure like it now. I’m growing two tomato plants and some pepper plants. Even a ghost pepper plant to gift one of my neighbors. He mentioned it in one of his stories about his childhood growing up in Puerto Rico. I’m too scared to try one myself but I’d gladly grow it for someone else to enjoy.
Ideally I’d grow luffa’s too b/ I think they’re really cool but realistically I just don’t have the space. For a long time I thought luffas came from the ocean. I was shocked to learn a few years ago that they actually grow from the ground. Total shocker for me.

I have some marketmore cucumber seeds but I haven’y planted them yet. I genuinely don’t think I have the space to grow anything else but I want to so bad! I was hoping to make some pickles. My husband can’t stand the taste or even the smell. He finds them utterly repulsive! However, I love pickles!!! Homemade pickles are always better imo. One of my neighbors made me some fresh pickles last year. She gifted me a small jar. I ate the entire thing and drank all of the juice in front of her. I couldn’t contain my enjoyment. I told her that she needed to start selling them. They were insanely good! Best pickles I’ve ever had hands down! My mouth is literally watering at the thought rn. I’m not sure I can live up those insanely high expectations. Anyone that’s grown pickles before, was it worth it?

I recently got to see one of my close childhood friends get married and another friend that attended the wedding from out of state. It was nostalgic seeing old friends. We’re no longer close like we were but we can still talk and pick up like no time has passed.

I’ve been dealing with some health issues that are slowly improving. Yay!

I’ve enjoyed getting to spend time with family, for birthdays and even for times of mourning recently.
My husband’s grandpa spent some time in the hospital after a stroke. We had just celebrated his 95th birthday just two weeks prior. He passed away while being hospitalized for a stroke. It was really difficult seeing him in that state but it was beautiful to see how everyone came together. We spent almost ever day up at the hospital grieving. We knew that stroke likely meant the end. We’re grateful for the time we’ve had with him and the wonderful family members that came together to show support. He never lived in a nursing home. He was cared for by family up until the end. He lived a long and full life.

On a lighter note,
I recently hatched quail. Yes quail! They are only a few days old and positively adorable! I can say though, they poop a loooot! My husband wants to build a small aviary set up or a multi tier hutch to house them. I’d like an aviary style but the tiers sound a lot easier to clean. I’m still undecided 🤷‍♀️ wondering how on earth I’m going to keep up with their poops. I’m definitely still learning. The goal is to have a steady supply of fresh eggs. Tbh, I’m completely questioning my reasons for getting quails at this very moment. Is it worth it? Idk 🤷‍♀️ I can only hope 😅 To be continued….

My three dogs are as cute as ever. I can’t get over how different they all are. They crack me up and keep my company when I’m down. Skye likes to bury his head in the covers and wait for me to see him. I call him my little doxie because he acts so much like a dachshund. He’s the biggest goof ball of the three. Sterling is the little dude with the swag. He loves waiting for the sprinkles to turn on so he can run through them. He’s obsessed with playing ball, even when it’s pouring rain. He tries to get me to play ball with him 10x/ day. He loves to get my husband to swing him around while he bites down on his monkey toy. It’s absolutely ridiculous to watch but he loves it! Shiloh has the personality of a Bernese Mountain Dog. I think the poodle side of him got lost in there somewhere. He loves cold weather, hiking in mountainous terrain, and lounging. He can’t stand to get wet and he doesn’t like the heat. The AC is his best friend. He’s more or less a large teddy bear. He’s definitely the most chill of the bunch.

I recently did a MN session with a bio stimulater and skin booster. It was a slightly more challenging to do but I managed it. The photo of me in a black floral dress is about 1 week following the mn session. I expect the results to continue with more sessions and more time passing.

Life has been up and down a lot recently. I’m still trucking along and trying to make the most of everything, especially the special moments. It’s easy to get caught up in the small things. Here’s your reminder to not sweat the small stuff. If it won’t bother you in 5 years, then don’t give it too much attention. Focus on the good things, the good times, and the good memories 🫶🏼
