I have this exact system of waterers for my quail hutch. I’ve kept quail this summer, and I’m preparing for the winter. It can get very cold here in the Midwest, and I’m worried about my ability to keep their waterers from freezing.
(I can’t bring my quail inside a shelter over winter)
Help me brainstorm some options for this 1 liter watering system to keep from freezing?
Saw this on marketplace and thought it be neat (haven’t bought it yet). Would it be okay? Or should I go for something more horizontal?
I was thinking about making the first floor gravel with some shrubbery, and a hideaway, Adding some more planks to create more floor space for the second and third floors. And adding multiple spots for food and water.
I could put this thing on its side and fix it so it’s livable horizontally
I love them so much!
spotted wandering around my neighborhood in the Pacific Northwest. It must be an domesticated escapee but I was quite taken with it and would very much like to know what subspecies it is.
How can I befriend my new male and female Japanese quails??
Hi, thanks for taking the time to help me out.
This is Gamora and Mr Quill ❤, they are about two months old; I got them from a neighbour friend who breeds quails, and added them to my group after one of my females passed away.
I've had them for a long few weeks, and they just dont seem to warm up to me at all. I spend a long time everyday offering mealworms or vegetables from my hand. Sometines they'll see my regular quails eating from my hand and then cautiously join, but usually hop away scared if they get too near.
My quails have adorably come to associate the sound of a crinkling bag with mealworms, so whenever I open the mealworms bag they start hopping around with excitement! These two new birbs don't seem to catch on at all even though I do it EVERYDAY.
Ive made sure there are no stress triggers and they have a lot of stimulation. I treat them the exact same way I do with all my others. What do I do??
Excuse the awful picture, I didnt want to get close and disturb him. I was surprised to see the male actively paying attention to the egg, rolling it u der him, putting his foot on it trying to position it. Hes now sitting on it and hasnt left the corner where it is since she laid it. I know this is a male, he crows, mates, all the gubbins. Is this usual? I heard buttons rarely sit eggs, let alone a guy?! Im going to clean the enclosure shortly and I'm hoping it doesnt scare him off sitting, since it would be cool if he did.
Hello guys,
I'm new to quails and have 7 (6 hens, 1 roo) since about 2 weeks.
When I bought them, some had some missing feathers, but I thought it must be normal.
They live in an aviary (around 3 square meter, 2 meters high - so plenty of space), and seem quite happy. The previous owner held around 20 quails on an enclosure maybe of the same size - I thought, that might be a reason for why some of them have missing feathers.
Now since they live at mine, since 2 weeks, some of them even got worse. The worst is probably the one on the photo.
3 of them have missing feathers on the back, and some of them also miss some feathers on the head.
I have heard of moulting, but actually have no idea what that looks like.
In the first couple of days, they laid around 5-6 eggs each day. After a week or so, that started to drop, now they only lay around 1-2 eggs.
I tried to check them for mites, or anything else I could see, but they really don't like to be touched.
Is this normal?
What could cause it (is it moulting)?
How long will that go?
And can I do something to help them?
How should I treat this??
My favorite little hen is mysteriously injured. I went to Check on them before I went out for the evening (because it has been hot) and found everyone looking stressed, and Peepers bleeding. She had blood on her beak like she attacked someone, but the only injury is her own. It looks like her wing was pulled almost OFF! The very tip of her beak is slightly chipped, but I think most of the blood was from her trying to preen her wing injury.
I rinsed the wound and flushed it with Veteracyn+, wrapped her in a hand towel and put her in a well ventilated box to isolate her. Also got her to take a couple drops of Nutridrench from a dropper. Wondering if I should try to wrap her so she holds the wing still and doesn’t mess with the wound, or just watch her to make sure she doesn’t mess with it? Can I use Neosporin (the kind without pain meds) on this? I don’t want her to eat it off.
I had a couple of scalped quail a while back (different group), but this is the first I’ve dealt with a wing that she could move or peck at.
After treating her, I went back to check everyone else more thoroughly. Everyone is stressed and panting (more than they would from the heat), and most of them are gathered upstairs in the hutch hiding. I can’t find any sign of a struggle besides a couple of small drops of blood spattered on the wall upstairs. I would have missed them if I hadn’t been looking. I can’t figure out what she could have caught her wing on. There is no sign of predators trying to breech the cage.
They live in a modified rabbit hutch. It is very secure with 1/4” hardware cloth surrounding, including under ground, double latches with safety clips, pavers around the base, etc.
Peepers is by far the calmest, sweetest, most curious quail I have ever had. She is not easily spooked (no one in this particular group is aggressive or flighty at all). She will walk right out of their hutch, stand there looking around, and let me pick her up without a fuss. I checked her in her box a few minutes ago and she stood there looking at me, then tucked her beak into her good wing and went to sleep. Poor baby
I know it’s extremely rare but not unheard of for a female to sit on her eggs in captivity but mine has been doing it consistently. I used a laser thermometer and the eggs are receiving adequate warmth. Is there anything I should do to prepare IF they actually hatch? Should I give her a heat lamp to help? IF they hatch should I move them to a brooder by themselves or with their mama? Thanks!
this quail is just so damn mean, she can’t get along with ANYTHING. i had to seperate my male, and females into seperate cages because she scalped them. i’m starting to think she might be the one who needs seperated, because she’s so insanely aggressive to litteraly everything and i can’t get her to stop. i feel like she honestly just needs to be by herself, because she’s severely injured/scalped everything that’s been in the cage with her, but i know so many people down on keeping them alone which is why im posting to ask. i feel like it’s safer overall for her to be alone if she’s this aggressive to everybody, like she just hates them all. i took this picture after pulling her off one of the last uninjured flock mates head. i have no clue why or how she scalped my male either.
Anyone able to tell if my bird is male or female? I can’t tell or don’t know if I should wait a bit longer !
This little chick is about 1.5 weeks old, is developing slowly, and is having trouble walking. It hatched with only one curled foot, but I fixed that with taping feet flat for a couple days. But now both feet seem to want to curl back and seem to be almost loosing strength. I’ve been feeding vitamins and egg yolk. It is eating and drinking when everything is in reach. It can shakily walk, but can’t get up if it falls. It has constant shivers, even when warm.
With winter getting closer here in Norway, I’ve started preparing for the colder months with our chickens, quail and ducks.
I’ve been reading quite a bit about how different poultry handle cold weather, especially when it comes to moisture, ventilation, frozen water and keeping their housing dry. I ended up putting everything together in an article, along with some of the sources I’ve used.
Thought I’d share it here in case it’s useful for anyone else getting ready for winter too. 🙂

The bump is kinda firm. Anybody know what this is and if I should treat it or leave it as it is?
Hi all, as the title says, I'm wondering where to place cucumber in my coop so my quails have easy access to it, without stepping on it or rolling/pushing it all over the floor?
Pierce it on spikes? (Danger of injury)
Hang it on hook? (They would pull it down sooner or later)
Zip tie on the wall? (Inconvenient to refill)
Cucumber sized basket attached to the wall?
I'm giving them 1/4 or 1/2 of the cucumber every morning now during the hot days.
