Winter Cycling - How well maintained are the trails?

Hi,

I grew up in the Milwaukee area, left for college, and I've been gone for ~20 years.

I'm moving back in the spring of 27.

While I was out and about, I picked up cycling as a hobby. Mainly all-road/adventure style. I've been living in the Mid-Atlantic and have been living in mild-ish winters, or at least winters with minimal snow.

I lived in NC for 10 years (they don't have winter, they just have a weird fall/spring fusion) and I'm currently living Baltimore, and it gets cold here, but not that cold, and they don't get snow or ice that sticks around for too long.

So I'm used to cycling year round and I don't mind bundling up if it's cold.

I'm wondering how clear the trails are in Milwaukee? Do they plow and salt them?

I'm considering investing in a wide-tire (29+) bike with studded tires specifically for winter riding. Is that smart or overkill?

I just don't want to be stuck indoors for the winter, then struggling to get back into shape when spring rolls around.

▲ 10 r/Pizza

Tonight's dinner.

Pesto sauce, sausage, pepperoni, red onion, kalamata olive, portobello mushrooms, jalapeño, and garlic-herb goat cheese + Chevre crumbles.

Crust was Kenji's Crispy Tavern style, baked about 12 minutes at 500° on cast iron.

Took my Straggler up the Gwynn's Falls trail - Baltimore, MD

Rough degraded pavement from the Inner Harbor to the trailhead, mixture of pavement and gravel up the falls. Did it all on Continental Contact 700x42mm

She ran smooth.

What is the deal with bike storage in condos and apartments?

Hi!

I'm originally from Milwaukee, moved away for college, and now moving back next year.

My wife and I will be renting at first, then potentially buying a condo. Probably on the East Side.

What is the deal with bike storage in apartment buildings and condos?

My dad has a condo and his building has rules against bringing bikes indoors. Bikes can only be kept on a communal rack in the garage, and there's nowhere to work on them, which I do not like at all.

**Is this common? Or do most places just let you bring them into your apartment/Condo?**

I'm a pretty serious hobbyist. I have 2 nice bikes, plus my wife has one, and I do most of my own maintenance at home, so I'd either need to bring it up to my condo/apt or have a dedicated workspace with secure storage.

I'm assuming if we rent a duplex, it's less likely to be an issue, but we're trying to keep our options open.

Thanks!

My glasses prescription is:

Right: Sph -9.50, CYL: 1.75, AX: 020

Left: Sph -9.50, CYL: 1.25, AX: 165

Contacts are -8.50 sph for each and otherwise the same.

The issue I am having is that I struggle to see in dimly lit situations when wearing glasses, even in situations where I can see fine with my contacts.

While my contacts are great, I really need functional glasses for emergencies. Like, if my house is on fire in the middle of the night, I'm not going to be putting my contacts in, I'm going to be grabbing my glasses off the nightstand.

Anyway...

Over the last couple years, I have had horrible experiences with eyeglasses, but my contacts are fine.

Consider the following scenario: I am standing on a street corner looking at a street-name sign across the street. In Daylight, I can read the street name just fine. At night with contact lenses, I can read the street name fine. At night with glasses, I cannot.

Another scenario is that I might be walking outdoors in sunlight and can see fine with my glasses, but if I walk into a store, they basically stop working for anything more than 10 feet away.

I've been to MyEyeDr, and a non-chain optometrist, and everyone swears my glasses are made correctly, and they just dismiss my complaints with "glasses will never be as good as contacts".

I don't think that's the *entire* explanation behind my issue, but nobody listens. There has got to be some other issue with either my prescription, or the way the glasses are made.

The last time at MyEyeDr, I told them "spare no expense, give me the best of whatever glasses I need." so I got the high-index lenses, made sure to get small round frames. Still, they don't work in dim light. It's okay for stuff within 10 feet, but useless otherwise.

If there's no trick to getting better glasses, maybe my prescription is wrong, but I have no idea how to find an optometrist that can actually help, because the ones I have actually gone to swear by this prescription.

So how would I find an optometrist that specializes in astigmatism?

It's not like I can just ask for a referral from MyEyeDr, I don't feel like I can trust optometrists or opticians, because they all just wanna sell me a pair of glasses and move on to the next patient.
