Every year once or twice, since I was 13 years old, then with my sister, later alone or with my kids up until 3 years ago, and ever since alone, travel back home stateside to visit my elderly mother of 78, for either a few weeks in winter or a month or so in summer. I’m a teacher and I get to go only when school is out.
When I was younger I didn’t grasp the concept of being comfortable while traveling. I didn’t care. Flew economy for years and years and still do when I can’t catch my special offers. But now, I’m 56, I know I am not old, but forgive me for saying, I do start to feel my age. Not a spring chicken anymore, as my mom would say. In the past decade I have become a student of frequent flyer programs, Flying Blue to be precise, best connections from where I live in Italy with my family. AF has truly become, together with Delta, my two most favorite airlines. KLM being also part of the family. Love the Dutch. Through the years I have learned the importance of being loyal. Miles, status, lounges, upgrades, and AF, KLM, Delta, have that special something, I personally like. Sure, I’ve had my mishaps with them as well, but no one is perfect right? Flying today is not as fun as it used to be. So much has changed, especially since COVID. Now, getting ready for my yearly visit to see my mama, and what a beautiful gift I got offered this morning at check in. I am a Silver member, I was gold for a year as well, had some extra miles which brought down the price of the business upgrade, and hey I took it. I think it was well worth it. I was already seating in economy comfort, but nothing beats a business class journey. Not the first time, and with AF it is so well worth it.
Forgive my long message, I just wanted to share. I did have a fully refundable ticket as well. I know that if it is not a full fare you’re not eligible for upgrades. Anyway, thanks for reading, if you read it, and I wish everyone great travels no matter where you’re going tomorrow.
Strolling through the beautiful streets of Amsterdam, this window caught my eye. So much yumminess in one place.
A reflective essay about the emotional cost of distance, the weight of caring for aging parents, and the quiet strength of a daughter who understands more than she says. A story of love stretched across oceans, and the guilt — and grace — that comes with choosing family on both sides of the world.
I cannot open my closet that I risk locking my cat in it. She adores being in the closet, her favorite spot.
I’m trying to get back into my passions, my interests. As I get older I am learning that I want to dedicate some time to what I like to do, and not just for everyone else. Here is my first personal essay written and posted on Medium. Let me know what you think. Constructive criticism is always a +
