My mostly deathless fresh file run

Greetings fellow Carcosans. I have been doing a few different challenge runs since platinuming the game as I just can't seem to put it down. I've tried maxing out the Carcosan modifiers and playing through the game without using the armour matrix. Both of those challenges feel a bit unbalanced though with the enemies at some stage just becoming incredibly tanky and the game becoming more of a slog to play, so in the end I had to make some tweaks to the damage dealt modifier to get through all the biomes.

I decided to try a fresh file run with the aim of completing every biome, every Nightmare Strand and killing the King without dying. My only rules were not repeating any biomes for farming or powering up, no Carcosan modifiers, and only returning to the Passage when forced to. This does mean that I could continue from Shattered Descent into Marsh and from Acolyte's Haven into Cathedral while keeping my current run buffs, which did probably make those two biomes slightly easier.

On my first attempt I died with the King at about 30% health on the final phase, but I did learn something useful about the fight at least. This was my second attempt and I managed it without recording a death. My total deployed time was just a little under 5 hours. It is perhaps not a 'true' deathless run, because I did use 2 second chances - both in Desecrated Fortress - one in the Nightmare Strand and one later. Closest I came to dying was on Architect too.

I think I'm happy enough with this for now, but I could redo it and try to not use a second chance, or I could push on and try to get the true ending on the same file. I think this was more fun as a challenge than using the most extreme modifiers, so if anyone is looking for a challenge which is balanced and maybe more in-line with what they experienced with Returnal then I'd recommend giving this a go.

Small Prediction for Early Game of Revelation

I just wanted to highlight a small detail I picked out from the gameplay trailer of Revelation and how I think it will tie into the story. There is a short snippet in the trailer at approximately 1:45 where you see Cid and Vincent sneaking around what appears to be a Shinra facility.

My first thought when I saw this was that it’s hilarious and on point that Cid is ducking down and obviously trying to be stealthy to avoid detection, while Vincent is just casually strolling behind him like he doesn’t give a damn. Love little details like that which tell you so much about the characters without unnecessary exposition.

Then I started thinking about where this would take place and what they’re actually doing here. The area looks to me like it could be upper Junon, so my theory is that this is them making a bid to steal the Highwind. I think that unlike the original, where we don’t see how the party acquires the Highwind and no explanation is given (as far as I can remember), this time there is going to be a playable section with Cid and Vincent (and possibly others from the party – more likely Red and Yuffie, than Cait, as I’ll mention later) where we get to play through the Highwind heist.

Quite a few people have mentioned something like this, so I think it makes sense and is consistent with how they have expanded on other plot points from the original. Things that fans would want to see/play, which were underexplained in the original.

I don’t know what the best way to structure this section would be, as I presume it would take place in a similar timeframe as Tifa and Barret are breaking out of Shinra custody. Tifa and Barret break out from Shinra with help from the Weapon attack and Cait Sith. I don’t think the heist would be a long section, as the focus will still be on Tifa and Barret’s escape and the infamous confrontation with Scarlet. But I think they would want to complete the heist section before Tifa’s run to the end of the canon because I think that is the climax of the Junon escape sequence.

So, either you could play through the full heist first before Tifa’s execution sequence starts, or it could be a back and forth where you switch perspectives a couple of times throughout the chapter.

This is a slightly pedantic post, but taking the launch window announcement in literal terms, spring of 2027 (in the Northern Hemisphere) runs from 20 March to 21 June, meaning one year from today marks the latest possible date FFVII: Revelation can release if Squarenix hit their target release window and there are no significant delays.

Earliest release date: 20 March 2027

Latest release date: 21 June 2027
