7.99 carryout rant

I’m probably being dramatic here, but DAMN.

So yesterday was a slow opening shift for me as an AM. Things were going pretty smoothly. It was just me in the store with two drivers.

Later that afternoon an old man walks in. He mentions he saw a “$7.99 two topping carryout” deal on TV, and requested I give it to him. I immediately assumed he was referring to the “Weeklong Carryout” special in the system, which started off any large pizza at $7.99 (not including toppings or tax).

Our store is a franchise, so prices differ everywhere.

I’m not sure where he got the two topping part from, because when I add two toppings in the system using that specific coupon, the price increases to about $11 with tax. Without toppings, here it’s $8.55.

He gets visibly aggravated about the difference, and immediately goes on a rant about what he saw on TV, and that it “should be $7.99.” He also mentioned that he came to this store before, and another manager gave him the coupon without any difficulties. I asked him to describe him to me, and I believe he was talking about my GM.

I try my best to politely explain to him why the price is different from the one on TV, and that I can’t control how the prices show up here. I literally turn the computer screen around, and show him how the prices increase when you add toppings to the pizza.

He keeps cutting me off and mentioning how this is a scam, and angrily demands to see the manager. I was the only manager in the store at that time, and he simply wouldn’t listen.

So I call my GM on the phone, explain the situation, and he says he has no recollection of ever giving that man a coupon for a lower price. One of my drivers decides to deal with him, because I was starting to get other orders on the makeline that were waiting. He didn’t listen to him either.

Maybe I’m going crazy or something. Does the weeklong carryout work differently depending on the store?
