Tamil girl marrying into a Gujarati family, what should I know?

Hi everyone! I’m a Tamil girl and I’m in a serious relationship with a Gujarati man. We’re moving toward marriage and I’d really love to understand Gujarati family culture better so I can navigate things respectfully and thoughtfully.

I know every family is different, so I’m not looking for stereotypes. I’m more interested in patterns, values, customs, and little social nuances that outsiders might not know 😬

I’m meeting his family soon, so I’d love to know these things

I’d especially love advice on things like:

\- Family dynamics (How involved are extended family members usually?)

\- Expectations from daughter in law (spoken or unspoken)

\- Communication style (direct vs indirect, conflict handling, etc.)

\- Food culture / kitchen etiquette (I’m curious because food seems deeply tied to culture)

\- Festivals, rituals, and traditions I should learn about

\- Things that are considered respectful or thoughtful gestures

\- Common cultural misunderstandings between South Indian and Gujarati families

\- Things you wish non Gujaratis understood about Gujarati households

Also, if anyone here is in an intercultural marriage (Gujarati + non Gujarati), I’d love to hear your experience, what helped, what surprised you, and what you wish you knew earlier.

Thank you!
