Returning to work after sick leave (MH)

Police staff. Had a rather spectacular breakdown type thing. which has resulted in some time off sick. Not really work related as far as I can tell, though exposure to certain things and the shift pattern probably hasn't helped.

I've been in a few years and it's the first time it's happened/first time I've had to take time off like this, and I'm worried about going back. I keep my head for the most part, fairly competent, people seem to find me helpful etc. I don't like that it's affected work in such a noticeable way, and I feel very embarrassed about it. I'm still a bit all over the place, and very preoccupied with work thoughts which obviously isn't all that helpful.

Work have been great. Understanding, patient, not being at all pushy with return (they suggested time off as I was reluctant, and have told me to make sure I'm better before coming back), phased return already mentioned when the time is right etc. Line manager has reassured me that people will still judge me on my work/the reputation I've developed over the years, and not this wobble. Can't shake the shit feeling though.

Has anyone else been through similar? How was it? All experiences welcome.

HR Triage / Reject OH referral

Hello,

I work for a large public sector organisation.

Had a management referral to OH back in March. It was for mental health, and was triaged and rejected by one of the HR partners as they said I needed NHS support and an OH referral wasn't appropriate. My manager was clear in the referral that I wasn't looking for support/therapy (I already have counselling privately), but to make sure that there was nothing being missed reasonable adjustments wise / that everything was being done that could be from a work perspective.

I've worked there several years. Disclosed significant mental health stuff (including periods in hospital, though my last admission was two years prior to starting my role) as part of recruitment but have never spoken to OH before. Referral came off the back of some self-destructive behaviour and time off work (though my absence hasn't ever hit any trigger points). My performance is fine according to department metrics.

I'm struggling. I don't know if it's work or if it's life or if it's both. Work can be stressful, but I'm not sure if it's me being unwell or it's workload etc related. I'm concerned I'll crash out and go off sick again. Manager has suggested another referral is made, but I'm reluctant to consent as if it wasn't deemed necessary last time I imagine it will be assessed the same this time.

I'm concerned my absence levels will become an issue if I'm off again and would like to make sure I'm doing all I can work wise, but that doesn't seem to be considered an appropriate reason to have an assessment with the nurse / doctor (we have both in-house).

Is it typical for HR to reject referrals for this reason? Is it worth trying again? My mental health stuff is impactful enough day-to-day that it's considered a disability under Equality Act, if that makes a difference.

Thank you for your time.
