My deadly nightshade seed harvesting process

Pick a nice ripe berry. It should be dark purple, almost black, and soft to the touch. When tempted to taste it, remind yourself that it contains a potentially-lethal dose of atropine.

Crush in a bowl of water to avoid spraying poisonous juice everywhere. Fish out and discard the skin and pulp.

Capture the seeds with a pipette. You can also pour the water off through a fine mesh cloth, but I didn't have any handy.

Transfer to a saucer to dry. Remove any excess water with the pipette.

Allow to dry for 24 hours somewhere where children and/or curious little tortoiseshell cats can't get to it. The tag records the parent plants along with dates of pollination and ripening.

Bonus: a vial of the juice that I collected when I had about a dozen berries ripen on the same day. I discarded it afterwards because I couldn't think of any legitimate uses for it.

Pollinating my deadly nightshades

I tried using Q-tips, and I tried using a fine paintbrush, but with both methods I found that most of the pollen stuck to the tool, leaving little for the stigma. Plucking an anther from one plant and applying it directly to another ensured that most of the payload made it to the target. The only downside was the inescapable feeling that I was doing something perverted.

Thuri (short for Thuringwethil) shortly after arrival from the shelter

Give her a secure private space, they said. She'll need time to adjust to her new environment, they said. She should be ready to come out and explore in about a week, they said.

She said otherwise. Within two hours she was pawing at the door of my spare bedroom and yelling at the top of her lungs; this photo was taken about five minutes later.
