two free Lonesome Lake bunks tonight .... NH

I bailed out two hikers today who put their unused hut reservations in my name in case I learned of thru or section hikers who could use them

least they go to waste

if you know anyone hiking in the Whites right now and they are camping near Lonesome Lake hut but would like two hots and a cot instead

have them connect with me and I'll transfer to their names

Unstable Nobo Hiker Alert.

Beware of an emotionally unstable man that goes by Foxfire. There have been multiple incidents of him getting aggressive and borderline violent, including creeping on women and making them uncomfortable. He has a problem with alcohol that exasperates his growing issues. He also has an annoying habit of leaving graffiti on previously untouched and beautiful lookouts (symbols that spell out “I love you” that he also has tattooed on his body). If you see him avoid him and don’t camp in his vicinity. His last known whereabout was up on Mount Moosilauke heading north.

Emergency Bivy pros and cons?

if I'm driving someone who plans on a single day traverse I ask "if you needed to shelter on the mountain, could you?"

most common response is "yes, I have extra layers"

some say "I have a mylar blanket"

a few honest souls admit No

a couple, though, say they have a Bivy*

and I say Good Answer

~~ but what do I really know??

📢 in the comments please share your experiences, pros n' cons, recommendations, cautions etc** on bivys .... and if you have specific tips on inclement weather survival for single day hikers please throw those in

pics/ videos are helpful as are links 🔗

🌬🌨 the weather is already starting to winterize, I'd like to reach at least a few people who may pack and plan a little better because they learned from youins*

~

~

* for use in emergency, not in place of a regular tent for lightweight packing

** please don't just repaste generic existing lists (and please no AI)

*** nobo hiker Trombonious Monk taught me that term the other day

new community for low key key walker hikers

few days ago I posted about strolling the story walk behind Androscoggin ranger station

because that was my speed

I meant it as funny, comparing it to a 4k

but a lot of people applauded it and we're glad to see someone with limitations get out into the woods at their own pace

and we decided a community for folk with mobility, breathing, joint etc issues to find, share, talk about easy locations and routes was on order

may I present to you

r/LowKeyWalkHikesWMNF

please spread the word 😁

(pic is a few years old, that surgery is healed)

what is this hanging at campsite on Jefferson Notch?

I don't have the best phone so camera is meh

this hangs in a tree above the large shared campsite on Jefferson Notch Road

I don't think it's a camera

hard to tell if it's wood or plastic

so birdhouse? it weirded us out

no pics, didn't happen

if anyone decides to comment or post about supposed vandalism in the northern whites of NH

-- post pics of the damage/ the police report/ police log

your false claims are causing your fellow hikers to wasting time and money because they needlessly park in far flung locations

~~ I make their wasted money and feel bad that they're being misled and spending unnecessarily

is there interest in a Community about no and low elevation/ low key hikes and trails?

from my post yesterday that I meant as funny because a Story Walk is hardly a hike

I learned I'm not alone in limping along

and wanting to enjoy the forests and be as active as I can

would people be interested in a chat where we could tell each other about easier routes, possibly wheelchair accessibility, tips

maybe even plan meet ups etc?

I have autoimmune/ chronic illness crap, and a mystery breathing problem that presents like copd but isn't plus spine, right shoulder, right hand, both ankles, and both legs (knees and calves) injuries

(some have had surgery, some need surgery, some are just part of my life now)

I have gained a lot of weight the past few years from inactivity (and metabolic bs) and really want to be more physical

~ join me?

(pics are today at Sam Willey in Crawford Notch .... little over a mile, pretty rocky)

not every walk is up a mountain 🙃

my version of a 4k 😉

I had to use my crutches earlier this week

so am babying my legs while still trying to be active

walked at the Androscoggin rangers station

-- still fresh air, movement, and time alone ❤️

Where are the Mahoosuc hikers? the Kilkennys? everything is a Presi

or this year Gale/Zealand/North Twin to Liberty has replaced ZBonds as number 2

but the region is still Presi heavy

used to be a fair number doing Cabot and Waumbek as a mini traverse

and Gorham area to AT in Grafton Notch

or, always fun, making up your own traverse!

easiest on the legs hike that leads to a hut?

I want to actually summit a 4k this year

like a pooch, I'm food motivated so want to arrange the enticement of supper ready when I arrive, and pancakes on a mountain in the morning

not having to carry a tent or put one up when I'm tired possibly in the dark is also a plus

no traverse, just up to a hut and back down again next day

thanks for your guidance 😁
