No Flip Screen? Here is a Cheap DIY Ricoh GR Remote
Hey everyone,
The Ricoh GR is my absolute favorite travel camera. It’s perfectly pocketable, and the High-Contrast B&W simulation is just unmatched for street photography and architecture.
But we all know its biggest pain point: no articulating screen. Taking a selfie or getting those low-angle shots without lying on the ground is basically a guessing game, and the official accessories are a bit too expensive for what they are.
To fix this, I put together a cheap DIY alternative using an M5Stack module. It works flawlessly as a remote shutter!
⚠️ Important Note: This firmware currently ONLY supports the Ricoh GR IV series. It does not support the GR III at the moment, and it is unfortunately impossible to implement on the GR II.
The best part? You need zero hardware or coding experience to make one. It takes about 3 minutes to set up.
Here is the quick guide:
- Get the hardware: Pick up a cheap M5Stack StickS3 module online and grab a USB cable.
- Get the tool: Download the official M5Burner software to your computer. 3.Flash the firmware: Search for my firmware [Insert your firmware name here] in the software, connect your device, and hit "Burn".
- Pair it: Go to your GR's [Wireless Communication] -> [Pairing] -> [Execute Pairing] and it will connect automatically.
That's it! Now you can easily trigger the shutter while keeping the camera at any awkward angle.
For the tinkerers (Completely Open Source): If you want to dive into the source code, modify it, or add new features, you can find the whole project here:
Let me know if you guys end up trying it out or if you run into any issues. Happy to help in the comments!
