When to know it’s time to put down my senior dog
I have a 16 year old senior dachshund that was given to my grandmother from a family member over a year ago because they were going to put him down.
He has been incontinent and pees and poops on himself and even on the way to the bathroom outside he will walk and just pee all down the hallway.
I often come check on my grandma and since this dog has been given to her- her entire floor is buckling and her house specifically her room reeks of dog pee and poop from her inability to properly clean up all of his accidents. It has became a health concern and I try to get cleaners in to sanitize her floors but even so the pee has soaked into all the wood.
He can barely walk almost like his back curves in but according to the vet previously he has been in no pain.
He falls often times walking to the backyard and when he is finally outside he won’t even walk to the grass and frolic. He pees some more on the concrete and yelps to come inside not even 15 seconds after being let outside.
He doesn’t really move throughout the day. He does still eat and he drink ALOT of water which is maybe why he pees these huge lakes to the point the floor is soaked in it.
Every other family member I bring up the idea of euthanasia makes me feel like a monster- which I understand like the dog cannot consent to being put down.
I don’t know what to do- giving him to a shelter also seems so cruel because he is 16 like how much longer does he have anyways- and to spend the last days with strangers from yet another homing change.
I don’t know if it’s time to put him down or not.
