Mac Miller feat Thundercat - What’s the Use?

Mac whenever he was in his R&B bag and made R&B-esque songs was always a treat to see, especially during this Tiny Desk performance. It’s such a shame he was taken away at such a young age and at the height of his career. I’m sure he would’ve delved more into the R&B world since that was the direction he was going in. R.I.P. Mac!

James Blake discussing D’Angelo’s “Voodoo” and what it means to him.

I like when big named artists discuss albums that you yourself are also interested in. It’s nerdy stuff like this is what makes you appreciate your favorite albums more.

What are your thoughts on Earl Sweatshirt?

Very dope rapper with a solid catalog. He’s the best out of the Odd Future camp as far as lyricism goes, but musically Tyler has him beaten by a landslide. I will say though his album “Some Rap Songs” is one of the most overrated albums ever. I’ve seen people say it’s the modern day Madvillainy and I find that to be blasphemy. Everything else is solid though.

The man of the hour! The GOAT himself!

Just finished watching the Part 3 special screening and it was amazing! Tite Kubo along with the animation staff discussed anime only scenes and how the crew recreated Kubo’s art in the anime. It was awesome to see the process!

What are your thoughts on Armand Hammer?

Incredible duo with a great catalog under their belt. Even their solo albums are amazing so it’s a win-win situation with them. Their work with The Alchemist is my favorite of theirs.

What are your thoughts on Lofi Hip Hop?

Me personally I’m a huge fan of the sub genre. It’s basically an extension of Jazz Hip Hop but with a modern style to it. It leans heavily into the anime/Japanese aesthetic so that’s right up my alley. Nujabes and J Dilla are credited for being the godfather’s of the sub genre, but also Fat Jon deserves to get credit as well. He’s responsible for helping Nujabes create one of the most ground breaking soundtracks in Lofi and that is the Samurai Champloo soundtrack. SoundCloud is another pillar for being one of the main platforms for exposing the sub genre as a whole and bringing it to a wider audience. I’ve discovered a lot of great Lofi artists on there and still continue to do so. Lofi might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it definitely deserves a spot in the hip hop culture.

To anyone that’s ordered off of Figuartsmate, how long did it take to receive your order?

I recently purchased the Storm Arena Nash Hong Kong exclusive from them about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and I’m still waiting for it to arrive. It’s already been shipped and is here in the states (I’m located here in the USA), but it’s been stuck in customs for over a week now. I was looking to see if anyone else had the same experience and how long it took to get delivered to you?

From a musical standpoint, what are your thoughts on Kanye West?

To me his first 5 album run puts him into the hall of fame and could arguably be the greatest album run in music history. Everything after that it’s been a downward spiral for him. I would say Yeezus was his last cohesive album that he’s put out because everything starting with TLOP to now are glorified demo tapes. There really hasn’t been any substance in his music over the last decade and has been more of a gimmick than anything else. TLOP has some good tracks off it, but overall is a chaotic mess and has been a reoccurring theme for him since. All of his projects start to feel like unfinished demo sessions with him labeling it as an album and calling it a day. It’s gotten to a point where he has become overrated since none of his newer music matches any of the acclaim he continually gets. He still gets his props for giving us an unforgettable album run during his heyday, but now he’s become more of an afterthought which is a shame to say considering he still has potential left in him to release a great album if he wanted to.

Janet Jackson “Control” appreciation post!

I’ve been in a Janet mood lately and this album is one that I always circle back to from her the most. This is the one that laid the foundation for Janet’s legendary career and made her a household name. One of the greatest albums ever made! Not one skip on this album whatsoever! I’d say my top 3 tracks off the album are Funny How Time Flies, When I Think of You, and The Pleasure Principle. Also gotta give a big shoutout to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for helping making Janet the superstar that she is. What Quincy Jones was to Michael, that’s how Jimmy and Terry are for Janet.

Intro- Ribbon In the Sky

One of the greatest cover tracks ever. Intro did this Stevie Wonder track justice!

Can an album still be considered a classic even though it has some skips on it? To me yes it can.

Ready to Die is a perfect example of this. Tracks like Me and My Bitch, the interlude, and Friend of Mine are automatic skips for me. Hell even Juicy is as well and I’m not saying it’s a bad track, but I heard it so many times throughout my life that I’m just burnt out on it.

Who is a rapper that gets universal acclaim, but you yourself could never get into? For me it’s Kid Cudi.

I could never get into his music. Even with MOTM being a highly influential album, his stuff never clicked with me like it did with other people.
