Is it normal for co-workers to talk shit behind others backs?

Almost all my co-workers are constantly insulting and making fun of other co-workers when they aren't around, and vice versa. I'm certain that they are doing the same to me when I'm not around, making me resent all of them. Is this just a part of work or an exception?

I got a factory job where I'm going to be earning 5k+ in a couple years (really good for my country). But the job in it self is boring and repetetive, I just picked a trade school that was recommended to me since I didn't know what I wanted to do and ended up here. Job generally just consists of sitting in a control room and guiding maintenance teams and making sure everything is running / fixing things quickly if it isn't.

I'm thinking of switching fields to a more physical outdoorsy job that would pay around 3k, but it would be much more interesting and active. It seems like something I could genuinely enjoy, not that I hate my current job.

I'm 22 and if I keep my current job and save like I am, then I should be able to retire at around 40 with my investments. I'm not sure what to do, I feel like I'd waste my life doing this groundhog day of a job. If I switch field I'd have to go trough 1 year of schooling (free), and then earn lower pay for the rest of my life. I'd also delay my retirement somewhat.
