I’m… so confused

I’m… so confused

I must look at way too much skate content online because I just saw an ad on Facebook for hydraulic disc brake skates? Their tagline is “finally you can stop” but like- there are already many ways to stop on skates? Interesting concept though. Looks like there’s a kickstarter for it so they’re not for sale yet but this just seems crazy to me.

What do we think?

(I’ll post a link to the YouTube video of the skates in action in the comments. I am 100% not affiliated with them I just saw the ad and had to watch the video because wtf? 😂)

Falling safely

I just came across this guy on ig so I thought I’d share for all my learn to fall safely folks! He’s a professional stuntman and has a few “how to fall” videos including some on skates. I think they’re pretty helpful! I have always learned to fall on my pads (roller derby) but lately I’ve been falling on one wrist a lot at the skatepark and it is starting to hurt even with my wrist guard. I might need to use some of this guy’s tips because apparently falling directly on my pointy parts isn’t the best idea!

(Btw this is more rollerskating adjacent though it is related to me falling while skating. Apologies if not allowed!)

Lost 50lbs and now my skates don’t fit!

I guess I’m pretty much just venting but I want to share my skate fitting/purchasing woes in case it helps someone or in case someone else can relate and lend a virtual hug. lol

I have lost around 50 lbs in the past 6 months of my 70lb goal. Working with a Dr, trainer, diet, exercise (skating and lifting), meds, the works so I’m happy about the progress! However- I did not realize that my feet could shrink significantly! In the past few months that I have been back to skating a lot again, I have bought 2 pairs of skates- Suregrip Boardwalks, measured and fitted at an IRL skate shop, and just recently secondhand Bont Parkstars because I’ve been getting really into park skating, sized using my previous measurements and the Bont website.

Ive been having this issue lately where my skates feel comfortable at first but after a few minutes I feel like I need to constantly adjust them. My skating has also been feeling way sloppier and my feet hurt. I remeasured my feet and come to find out that my feet have shrunk in both length and width so now my skates are at least a half size too big. I know it was probably a bit stupid to buy skates without remeasuring FIRST but I literally had no idea that my feet could change so much in a short period of time! So frustrating!

Woodward Adult Camp

Has anyone been to Woodward in PA and would be willing to share their experience? There’s an adult camp over Labor Day weekend for all of the sports, including roller skating and Woodward is only a couple hours from me. I am a beginner park skater but have become totally obsessed with it and I’ve been progressing pretty well (and I already have an extensive skating background). That weekend is right in between the week of my 44th birthday and my 4 year sober-versary and I just thought it would be a cool way to celebrate how far I’ve come even if I couldn’t do ALL of the things at the park (I wouldn’t do the super duper high vert ramp but I DO want to flip into the foam pit really badly lol) And who knows how many years I have left to try stuff like that?

I’m just wondering a) if other roller skaters actually go and b) if it would be a bad idea to go with only a few months of solid park experience.

Thanks for your help!! 🙏

Kinda dropped in for the first time!

This bowl is very shallow compared to the two others in this park but I dropped in for the first time (yay!) and immediately ate it. I say I kinda dropped in because it’s honestly a pretty small drop. I tried a few more times and couldn’t get the hang of carving with speed. But I am proud of myself for trying something new! And it was still really fun.

Also I’m loving my newish Bont Parkstars! And I included a pic of my new knee pads that I’ve already trashed! 😂 I lost a lot of weight over the past 6 months and sadly have now shrunk out of my 187 pads but these S1 pads feel pretty great.

I’m watching shorty’s skate series and practicing carving on the smaller transitions (from flat). Any other tips?

Haha suckersss!

Also pictured: the new (to me) secondhand Bont Parkstars I just scored and my skates and I watching a romantic sunset from the playground slide after my illegal totally legal skate sesh.

Skate park win! I got out of my comfort zone thanks to a rude but adorable tiny skateboarder.

Wholesome story time: I am not new to skating but I am a skate park beginner. I‘m embarrassed to admit how many times I’ve driven to the skate park, taken one look at the crowd, and hauled ass on out of there. 😂

So I went really early this morning to avoid the crowd. I skated around, practiced pumping a bit and stuck to a very small non-threatening area. I felt awkward and weird but I was making slow progress.

About an hour in a little kid showed up on a skateboard, inexplicably alone, and started zipping around like he owned the place. Little dude rolled right up to me with a big smile and said “you look kinda scared”. I said I am kinda scared! He said come on I’m 10 and I’m not scared! With little kid bravado, he started lightheartedly razzing me. I was a bit taken aback but I joked back with him saying well maybe when I’m 60 I’ll be as good as you are! He said I think you’re old enough now- rollerskating looks EASY! 😂

Now I’m not normally one to be peer pressured by children (as a mother, I’d be doomed!) but this kid got me laughing at myself. He pointed out some smaller features that I hadn’t tried, daring me to go for it. I tried a few things and in no time I was skating around way more parts of the park than I had before just laughing at this rude but encouraging little kid. I think I just had to let loose and take myself less seriously. Soon after, a bunch more adults and kids showed up and he joined them so I think he got there early waiting for his group to arrive.

Moral of the story- you never know who will teach you something if you show up and try something new!

Put Avanti plates on my Boardwalks

It was rainy for most of the long holiday weekend so I spent some time fooling with my skates and put my Avanti plates on my Boardwalks. I was afraid they were too long for the boot but I got to test them out this evening and they’re awesome! I was zipping around my neighborhood rolling over all the post-rain leaves and junk. I might make this my dedicated trail set up. Idk.

It was easier than I thought it would be to swap the plates. The rivets came out easily (maybe after taking the rivets out of hockey boots anything would feel easy though 😂). If anyone wants tips on how to do it yourself I’m happy to share!

Btw I dyed one of these wheels green years ago and I have no idea what color I used (don’t ask me why I dyed one wheel). I want to dye the rest but I think they’re going to have to be mismatched. Any suggestions on color? I might dye the boot slimier green too. I have to make them more ✨aesthetic✨ lol.

Come hell or high water, I was getting a skate in on Mother’s Day!

Turns out the water got me… haha. My little croc clad buddy humored me and went on a trail skate with me. He insisted on walking instead of biking or skateboarding, hence the constant slowing down. As soon as I got all geared up, it started to rain. It wasn’t coming down too hard so we went for a short one to the skate park and back. The skate park was packed even with the rain! Just as well- skate park and rain would have likely been a bad combo.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the skating mamas out there!

These are DIY (used) CCM jetspeed ft680 ice hockey boots on pilot falcon plates, painted with Angelus paint, with RIT dyed sonar zen wheels and grindstone mini heartstopper toe stops.

I bought pretty much the most comfortable, well-fitting but beat up pair of ice hockey skates I could find because I didn’t want to care if I destroyed them (they were $30). Other than the ice skates and heels, everything else I had on hand.

I mounted them the first time and they felt ok but then I skated on them and they were awful so I remounted the plate way forward and now I love them! My goal is to make hard boot skatepark skates, which I know this plate and mount aren’t ideal for. Also the sole is now like 50% JB weld between removing the blade holders and mounting twice so maybe not super safe idk. 😂

Scroll to see the original mount and the pre-Frankenstein ice skates.

Oh and disclaimer: if it isn’t obvious I am NOT a pro skate mounter and I have mad respect for those that do it! This is my second DIY skate build after my vans and I am just enjoying the learning process and fully understand the risks of using DIY skates. I also own normal skates. lol
