I need advise with my dog she is 18m old
Me and my wife decided to get a dog, we are both dog lovers with experience in large breeds. Our rescue pup is 18 months old we rescued her at approx 5 weeks old as she was left abandoned she is a bullmastiff.
She is fixed, well trained and very obedient however every time my wife is on her period she will nip, snarl and her behaviours will change towards my wife and my youngest daughter. It seems to be only females and it is only when my wife is on her period.
I spoke with a trainer and with his advice we would redirect her scent and when she would sit calm we would reward the behaviour however it doesn't seem to be working. My wife is due her cycle again and recently started medication to stop the bleeding however it doesn't change the scent, myself my wife and kids were at dinner our dog was laying in the livingroom and suddenly she sprung up and leaped over the baby gate knocking my daughters highchair (thankfully she was not in the highchair). And latched onto my wife while she was holding our daughter its almost as if she believes my wife is hurt or something I've owned large breeds and have never encountered this before.
I managed to get my dog off my wife and got her out the room. My wife now wants to rehome our dog but she is a really good dog its just when my wife is due to bleed/is bleeding during her cycle. And although my wife is heartbroken about it she says we have tried everything and can't risk herself anymore because that was a "close call" for both mt daughter and my wife and I do understand her. But shes 18 months and deserves another chance I believe. Is there something we are missing? Is there anything else we can do i know my wife's mind is made up and she is heartbroken and says she feels guilty but our daughter comes first.
Has anyone here experienced this? If so is there anything different we can try
