Americans living in Portugal, what do you do for work

I’m an American looking to move to Lisbon next year and curious what everyone does for a living.
I’m currently in a senior role in commercial banking in the US and have been struggling to find comparable opportunities that would allow me to work remotely from Portugal. From what I’ve seen, local salaries are significantly lower, so ideally I’d love to find something with a US or international company.

For those of you who made the move, what do you do? Did you find your job before moving? Are you working for a US company or international company?

Also curious if anyone has used a recruiter who specializes in helping Americans find remote jobs abroad.

Would love to hear how others have made it work!

Commercial banker looking to cross into fintech partnerships. Is the relationship background worth anything to you?

I’m a commercial banking RM, ten years in, 40+ middle market and institutional clients. Looking at partnerships and customer success roles at fintechs, and the pattern I keep hitting is that domain experience (fraud, compliance, payments infra) is a hard requirement, while the relationship side is treated as transferable and therefore not differentiating.

Curious whether that matches how you actually hire:

\- When you’re selling into banks, does someone who has sat on the bank side change your win rate, or is that overrated?
\- Is the domain requirement real, or shorthand for “we don’t want to train someone”?
\- Where do bank people land successfully when they cross over? I mostly see risk and compliance, less often GTM.

I am looking to make this move, so I’ll say that plainly. But what I most need is a read on whether the background translates, and if it doesn’t, what would close the gap. If you’ve made this jump or hired someone who did, I’d take any of it.

10 years in commercial banking, trying to pivot into fintech partnerships. Having no traction. What am I missing?

VP-level relationship manager at a large US bank, ten years in, 40+ middle market clients, consistently top-ranked in my region. I want to move into strategic partnerships or customer success at a fintech, senior IC level. One constraint shapes everything: I need something that works from Europe eventually, so genuine work-from-anywhere, not US-remote.

I’ve been doing direct outreach to hiring managers before applying, tailoring materials, taking informational calls. What I keep hitting:

**•**	Fintechs want domain experience I don’t have (fraud, compliance, payments infra)
**•**	Most “remote” roles are US-only once you read the fine print

For anyone who’s made this jump: did you take a step down in title to get in? Did a particular type of company actually work out? And does banking relationship management read clearly to fintech hiring managers, or does it need translating?
