A Goliath Alternative

Have recently asked about Goliath refill alternatives here and got some good answers. (Go check out that post if you‘re interested). Have now stumbled upon a Japanese adapter that no one has mentioned before. Don’t know if it really works, but it looks promising in theory. Anyone tried it?

Caran d'Ache factory

The article is 1 year old and in German (including audio report that differs slightly from the text), but if you take the time to Google-translate it into your language there is much is to be discovered. Including photos of the production floor. One fun fact I didn’t know about: potato starch is part of the pencil graphite mix. 🥔

Alternatives for Goliath refills

Hi everyone! I am wondering whether there are any refill options for 849 out there that have a wider color palette.

I know that not everybody likes the way Goliath writes, but I’m fine with the quality. What bugs me more are the limited color options. Blue, black, purple, red, green and turquoise might cover the bases for office writing, but I wish I could have more fun with my 849s (since I have quite a few) and use them for creative projects.

Is anybody aware of fitting refills with more colors? Maybe even gel refills that can be switched for Goliath? Thanks in advance!

Rare Caran d’Ache 849 Graffiti Novartis pen

The elusive graffiti (also called tie-dye) series from the 1990’s is, as far as I can tell, one of the early and undocumented collections. One of its defining features is how unique the pattern on each pen look. As if every pen was colored individually. If you have any graffiti pens in your collection, and in particular a Novartis branded one, post them here so we can compare just how unique the pens are.

Another Caran d‘Ache mystery

Got this pen from Vinted because I liked the woven pattern. It’s a 18k gold plated Caran d‘Ache (says so on the middle ring), and Madison model by shape. However, couldn’t find out anything about the guilloche pattern. This basket-weave tresse-like finish does not show up on the interwebs at all. Anybody seen this style before?

Ecridor Ammonite Ruby XS ballpoint pen

Before randomly spotting this beauty on eBay I didn't know Caran d'Ache made these cute short XS Ecridors at all. This one is sterling silver with swirly Ammonite pattern and even has a little ruby on the clip. Did some research and discovered there was one with sapphire too. Just wondering where I can get replacement refills now

Ecridor Type 55 Artiste mechanical pencil

Read about them in a previous thread here and could not resist when I saw one being sold on Vinted. I understand they are quite rare, rarer than pens and normal 0.7 mm Ecridor mechanical pencils, so this was a very lucky find.

It’s from Type 55 (inspired by Mustang car) collection that was introduced in 2007. Seems to be in a good shape, with only minor scratches, and I’m really enjoying it so far.

Caran d‘Ache online sale will start on July 15th. It will take place in all countries where Caran D‘Ache has an online store. The reductions vary by country though. In Germany and France, for example, the company advertises reductions up to 40%, in Japan up to 30%, and in the USA up to 25%.

Caran d‘Ache of the day

This 849 Caran d’Ache ballpoint pen is tricky to photograph. From a distance and in poor lighting it looks dark anthracite, or even black. However, when you hold it in your hand, it reveals a super dark violet leopard spots / organic camo pattern (that is also slightly textured). A pretty cool effect visible only to the one who writes with it (or looks closely). Got this one recently from Mercari and don’t know anything about it except that it was made in 2018 (that’s the date in the original refill). No idea what collection / collab / limited edition it belonged to though. If you have any info, it would be greatly appreciated!

Caran d’Ache draws a line between generations

Recently, I saw a discussion about whether Caran d‘Ache is actually manufactured or only assembled in Switzerland from parts made cheaply somewhere else. Came across this article today. It lays out the history of the company (turns out it’s family owned in 5th generation, and is the last writing instrument maker of its kind left in Switzerland), and talks about the manufacturing too. They have a plant in Geneva and employ 300 people there who make everything from pigments for Color pencils to leads and even the springs for the pen click mechanism. An interesting an informative read

Caran d‘Ache of the day

Just my 849 of the day. It‘s a fun collab the Swiss city of Monthey commissioned from Fichtre design studio in 2022. The sneakers look nice too (last photo). I believe it was a one-off local limited edition that mostly went under the radar, so the pen is quite rare. Any Caran d‘Ache pens you‘ve used today?

849 Pen of the Day

Just my pen of the day. I have never seen this pen mentioned anywhere online, so it’s one of the many rare, lost and untraceable 849 designs out there. My best guess at dating is 2022 based on the date on the refill inside. It seems to be an official St. Moritz souvenir pen, because the chopped pieces of the word „St. Moritz“ as well as the golden sun on the button are from the official tourism logo of this ski resort. Good memories about the time spent there!
If you know anything else about this particular pen, please share! Would be great to build a database for the old and forgotten 849 versions.

Esxence: what should I try?

It will be my first time going to Esxence niche trade fair in Milan. Won’t have enough time to try everything. What brands/ new perfumes should I report back on? What niche brands are you most interested in/ excited about?
