Hey everyone,

We have a 5-month-old Aussie/Golden Retriever/Bernese Mountain Dog mix named Emma. We brought her home when she was 10 weeks old. We also have two cats, both around 4 years old.

Overall, they seem to get along pretty well. One of our cats, Merlin, is extremely chill and doesn’t seem bothered by much.

The interesting part is that Emma is completely fine when the cats are sitting still or moving slowly around her. She can watch them calmly and even disengage. But the moment one of them starts walking away, running, or suddenly moving, her brain seems to switch off and she immediately wants to chase.

We’ve been working on rewarding calm behavior around the cats, and that works as long as the cats aren’t moving much. As soon as they move away, though, all bets are off.

Does anyone have experience with this or tips on how to train it? Sometimes creating enough distance for training is tricky because our cat literally follows us on walks and occasionally runs right in front of Emma like he’s trying to test her self-control on purpose. 😂
