Why the World Should Care About the Jieyang Mother Dogs and her four puppies
I don’t even know how to put this pain into words.
Over the past few days, millions of people across China have been heartbroken over a horrifying case of animal cruelty in Jieyang, Guangdong.
For anyone outside China who hasn’t heard about what happened:
According to widely circulated videos and eyewitness accounts shared online, a mother dog and her four newborn puppies were brutally abused by four juveniles.
The videos appear to show the puppies never fighting back or posing any threat. Instead, they desperately tried to hide beside their mother, trembling in fear and desperately searching for somewhere—anywhere—that might keep them safe from the relentless violence.
The mother dog also appeared to stay with her puppies instead of running away, even as she was being beaten and exposed to fire. Many people who watched the videos believe she chose to remain beside her babies, instinctively protecting them until the very end.
Watching those scenes broke something inside me.
The heartbreaking footage spread rapidly across Chinese social media, triggering an enormous wave of grief, anger, and outrage. Animal rescuers, volunteers, and concerned citizens traveled from different parts of China to Jieyang hoping to rescue any surviving dogs, preserve evidence, and urge local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
However, instead of the transparency people hoped for, many were left with even more questions. According to numerous people who were present, access to the village was restricted, visitors were questioned, and many felt they were being prevented from independently understanding what had happened. Official statements released afterward were met with widespread skepticism online, and public calls for accountability and a transparent investigation have only continued to grow.
I have cried until I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t focus at work. Every time I closed my eyes, I thought about what those innocent animals must have gone through in their final moments—the fear, the confusion, the unbearable pain, and the desperate hope that someone, anyone, would come to save them.
No living being deserves that.
What hurts even more is the feeling of helplessness.
We donate. We rescue. We speak up. We report. We sign petitions. We do everything ordinary people can do.
Yet cruelty continues.
Many people outside China may not realize that China still does not have a comprehensive national animal cruelty law protecting companion animals. As a result, many severe abuse cases end with little meaningful legal accountability, leaving both animals and the public without justice.
Animals cannot speak for themselves.
They rely entirely on us.
This is not about politics. This is not about culture. Cruelty is cruelty, no matter where it happens. Compassion should never have borders.
If you are reading this, I ask you for one thing:
Please don’t look away.
Please share their story. Help keep international attention on cases like this. Public attention can make a difference. It can encourage transparency, accountability, and remind the world that these lives mattered.
To every innocent puppy who died before ever getting the chance to experience love…
To the mother dog who, according to the videos, never abandoned her babies even in the face of unimaginable suffering…
I’m so sorry.
You deserved warmth.
You deserved safety.
You deserved kindness.
You deserved a life surrounded by love.
Instead, your final moments were filled with terror.
I will never forget you.
And I will never stop speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Please don’t let the world forget them.
