Blood donation saved my dogs life, looking for donors in Berlin

Last week my dog Toffee needed emergency surgery for a severe abscess and likely wouldn’t have survived without a blood transfusion. I was lucky that Tierklinik Valera in Berlin Zehlendorf had compatible blood on hand.

This experience showed me how much dog blood donors are needed, so I wanted to raise a bit of awareness. If your dog qualifies, consider becoming a donor, it could save another dog’s life.

Donor criteria:
- At least 20 kg
- Age 1–10 years
- No pre-existing conditions or ongoing medication
- Up to date on vaccinations, deworming, tick prevention
- No extended stays in southern/eastern Europe
- Never received a blood transfusion themselves

How it works: Free health check first (bloodwork, organ values, blood type, infectious disease screening). If all clear, donation itself takes only 5–10 min, with the full appointment around 90 min. Dogs can donate every 3 months.

Interested or know a dog that might qualify? Contact Valera Medizinisches Kleintierzentrum Berlin-Zehlendorf directly:
