Brand-new 7800X3D + Sapphire PURE RX 9070 XT: a month of hard resets at stock. A −300 MHz max-clock offset is the only thing that stopped them.
Built this PC on Sept 9, 2026. It has crashed well over 100 times since.
I'm writing the whole thing up because I simply want to explan my journey, and it's been one hell of a ride. Any help or similar experiences are welcome.
RMA is slow and painful where I live, so it's my last resort and I'm not sure I really want to go through it.
My real fear is spending weeks proving the card is faulty, waiting, and then getting another one that does exactly the same thing.
--------------------------
Hardware
--------------------------
- Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Sapphire PURE RX 9070 XT 16 GB, Hynix GDDR6. VBIOS 113-3E490TX-UP4 (023.008.000.068); Sapphire has no newer VBIOS for it
- Sapphire PURE B850M WIFI, BIOS R17 (AGESA 1.3.0.1b, latest). Also ran the BIOS it shipped with. Tried going back to R13, blocked with "Check RomLayout Fail"
- Kingston FURY Beast 2×16 GB KF568C34 (EXPO profiles are 6800 CL34 and 6400 CL32)
- Kingston NV3 1 TB
- PSU MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 80 PLUS gold certified (850 W, ATX 3.0, single rail). GPU on two separate PCIe cables, no pigtails, no extensions
- Gigabyte AORUS FV43U 4K144 HDR over HDMI 2.1 (also tested on DP 1.4)
- Antec CX700 ARGB
- Windows 11 Pro 26H2, currently Adrenalin 26.3.1 (tested everything from 25.x to 26.9.2)
--------------------------
What the crashes look like
--------------------------
Mostly an instant hard reset mid-game. No BSOD, no dump, just Kernel-Power 41 with bugcheck 0. Over 100 of those in 30 days.
Usually it's a full freeze with a white screen and a sometimes a continuous beep by the monitor's speakers, then a reset.
Some of the ugly ones: secondary PC crashes - 8 to 10 seconds after Windows started AFTER the crash, three times in a row, right when the GPU driver initializes.
nce everything lost power except the RAM RGB. Battlefield 6 threw DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG a few times and Windows twice disabled the GPU as a fail-safe.
The live kernel dumps (about two dozen, went through them in WinDbg) are 0x141 VIDEO_ENGINE_TIMEOUT and 0x117 TDR in amdkmdag.sys,
on every driver from Sept 9 to Oct 1. Also a couple of 0x1A8
"monitor connected but failed mode set" and 0x1B8, AMD crash defender (amdfendr) events,
and one USBXHCI 0x144 dequeue pointer mismatch. Zero WHEA errors anywhere.
The recent instant resets leave no dump at all.
**The reproducible trigger** is Battlefield 6, right after dying, when the map screen loads.
Huge frame-time and GPU clock spike, brief freeze, and after 2 or 3 deaths the PC resets.
It also crashed in Onimusha at low resolution 1080p with 260-300 fps uncapped,
card sitting at 3150 to 3220+ MHz at about 280 W.
**At stock the card boosts to 3150 to 3220 MHz** in light loads.
Sapphire's spec says "up to 3010 MHz", AMD reference is 2970. Power sits around 280 W against a 317 W limit, hotspot is fine,
VRAM runs 92 to 94 °C (Sapphire's relaxed fan curve, other brands are ~82-84).
So it isn't power or temperature holding the clock back, it just runs well above what the box says.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything I tried (one change at a time, long gaming sessions each, this took a month)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drivers first.
DDU in Safe Mode and clean installs of 25.x, 26.3.1, 26.7.1, 26.8.1, 26.9.1, 26.9.2, both Full and Minimal.
AMD Cleanup Utility just to make sure it's clear. Chipset 8.08.12.551. Realtek audio and 2.5GbE from Sapphire's page.
Windows Update driver delivery is blocked after it silently swapped my GPU driver for an old package once. 26.3.1 lasted longer than the rest (4 BF6 matches vs. crashing within 2-3 deaths on 26.9.2) but still crashed eventually.
There are many people online recommending disabling AMD HD Audio / Streaming Audio: tried it, it crashed almost instantly, so not that.
Removed every monitoring and RGB tool and their kernel drivers too:
HWiNFO, HWMonitor, Afterburner/RTSS, FanControl, ZenTimings, OpenRGB, TriXX (WinRing0), SignalRGB, Twinkle Tray, PawnIO, inpoutx64, CtiIo64.
That gave me a crash-free evening (1 hour) and I thought it was solved. It wasn't.
BIOS: shipped BIOS and R17. CMOS reset to full defaults
(JEDEC 4800, EXPO off, iGPU on, PCIe Auto, CPU completely stock) and still crashed, so it isn't my tuning.
RAM configs tried: EXPO 2 (6400 CL32, the kit's lower profile),
the same EXPO 2 timings run at 6000 (the 7800X3D's sweet spot, 1:1 UCLK),
also plain JEDEC 4800 with EXPO off.
Crashed on all of them.
SoC Auto, 1.20 V and 1.25 V.
CPU: PBO and Curve Optimizer (−20 all-core) on, and fully off. C-states on and off. PCIe Gen5 and Gen4, crashed on both.
iGPU on and off (with it on plus a driver, every fullscreen mode switch black-screened for about a minute, so it stays off).
Above 4G and ReBAR on and off. Memory Context Restore and Power Down on and off.
Nothing.
Memory: MemTest86 all night, 0 errors. TM5 anta777 91 min, 0 errors. memtest_vulkan on the VRAM passed too.
Stress tests: OCCT Power 1 hr AVX2 passed. Prime95 passed.
Meanwhile games crashed every 5-20 minutes.
Short synthetic tests were useless here since they didn't raise the GPU clocks.
Windows settings: sleep, hibernation and USB selective suspend off (sleep had quietly re-enabled itself once via the High performance plan).
PCIe link power management off.
HAGS on and off. TdrDelay/TdrDdiDelay 10.
VBS on and off. Game DVR off, Fast Startup off,
run-as-admin and DPI override on the game exe, Defender exclusions.
Tried NVIDIA's MPO registry fix (the one that also gets recommended for AMD):
on this Windows build the old key did nothing, and the newer DisableOverlays key put dwm.exe in a crash loop, so it's reverted and MPO is at default.
Uninstalled all the latest Windows updates (KB5124010 and the rest), still crashed.
The September update KB5124008, the one reported to cause Radeon freezes,
has been on this PC since day one and can't be removed. Later moved to 26H2, no change.
Overlays: played with the Adrenalin metrics overlay on and off,
and with every other overlay off too (Xbox Game Bar, Steam, Discord).
Crashed either way.
Adrenalin: Stock - crashed. Performance and standard - crashed.
Anti-Lag on and off, Instant Replay off, HDR on and off, FreeSync "AMD Optimized" vs "On" (seemed to help for one match, then didn't),
10-bit pixel format off, Dynamic Refresh off, switched the HDMI with DP.
Nothing.
Display timing: the FV43U's 4K144 mode has a tiny vertical blank (24 lines) that kept VRAM pinned at 2518 MHz at idle desktop.
Raised it to 55 lines with CRU. Idle VRAM dropped to about 700-909 MHz on desktop idle.
Crashes still happen.
Hardware: opened the case, disconnected every cable and fan, checked every connector, reseated the GPU, RAM and every power cable,
confirmed the GPU is fed by two separate PCIe cables straight from the PSU (no daisy-chain, no extensions), then ran with only the essentials (no case fans, no RGB).
Still crashed.
GPU tuning: undervolt alone (−65 to −95 mV) made it worse. Power +10% turned freezes into instant resets.
VRAM stock vs OC made no difference.
Battlefield 6 specifically: User.cfg thread limits, shader cache clears,
Javelin anti-cheat reinstall, profile file fixes.
Refunded it on Steam and bought it again, more than once (Thought initially it's just Battlefield's messing up my system - it's been hell...).
--------------------------
What finally worked
--------------------------
Adrenalin → Performance → Tuning → Max Frequency Offset −300 MHz - and it's over.
Everything else stock.
The card now runs around 3000-3100+- MHz. Zero crashes since,
in Battlefield 6 and Onimusha, across many long sessions.
−400 (about 2950 MHz) also held; I'm sitting at −300 because it's closer to spec.
The offset barely lowers voltage on RDNA4 (still ~1.1 V), so this is about clock, not volts.
Weird thing about Battlefield: when crashes happen the reported clock speed is averaged on 3,050MHz so I'm not sure why it causes crashes without the -300MHz solution. (I do know for a fact it happens a few times after you die and see the map).
One observation I did notice and is worth mentioning:
I also tried -200 MHz.
At about -65mv and -200mhz max clock changes it still crashed, but -
I noticed the hard crashed turned into regular AMD driver timeout errors without restarts.
Saw tons of other 9070 XT owners needed the same thing:
Reaper −400, Pulse −450, Nitro −230, −500 on the AMD forum, including someone with the exact same Sapphire PURE and the same 0x141 → amdkmdag chain.
So it looks like boost behavior on some chips rather than one bad card,
but honestly I can't be sure, and "it works if you underclock your brand-new GPU" is not where I wanted to land.
I have no idea how I'm gonna sell my PC one day once I'll need to upgrade and tell the buyer:
"Hey man, listen, it's an excellent gaming PC, but -
you have to install Adrenalin and make sure the clock down the maximum for about 300mhz that's just the way that it is."
If you've been through this with a 9070 XT, found a real root cause, or dealt with RMA for it, I'd be glad to hear from you.
I wish I saw all the other threads about the 9070 XT before I purchased it,
I saw tons of Youtube video reviews and on text and it was highly recommended by everyone.
I still think that IT IS a great card,
but the amount of complaints I see today about this specific issue is something I cannot ignore and makes me regret my decision.
(And yeah, I know the small minority makes the loudest noise, yet still...)
